LPG Booking System Failure Sparks Panic in Lucknow Amid Global Supply Concerns

Long queues formed outside LPG distribution agencies across Lucknow on Tuesday as online booking systems, including the IVRS helpline and digital portals, experienced widespread technical failures. The disruption left many residents unable to book cylinder refills, forcing them to visit agency offices in person.

Technical Glitch Disrupts Digital Services

The technical snag affected multiple parts of the city, rendering online booking systems temporarily inoperable. At gas distributor offices in areas like Tilak Nagar and Lajpat Nagar, customers waited for hours at counters to manually book their cylinders after digital methods failed.

Agency staff attributed the problem to a temporary server issue. "There is a server issue right now. It should be resolved soon," one staff member explained, adding that normal booking operations were expected to resume once the system was restored. However, the server remained down in many areas at the time of reporting.

Residents Face Practical Challenges

Aman Shukla reported repeated unsuccessful attempts to connect to the Indian Oil Corporation booking helpline. "I have now booked a cylinder through Hindustan Petroleum as a backup. If the gas runs out before the delivery arrives, managing daily cooking will become difficult," he said, highlighting the practical implications of the disruption.

Sahiba, a resident of Nazarbagh, shared similar frustrations: "We kept trying to book since morning but in vain. Calls to the gas agencies too went unanswered." This situation created significant anxiety for families awaiting refills.

Digital Divide Exacerbates Problems

The incident underscored challenges faced by those less comfortable with digital systems. Charu Srivastava, a Kanpur Road resident, cited her house help's struggle: "She struggled because her booking was not processed and had to seek my help." At Indane Jawan Gas Service in Lalkuan, numerous consumers resorted to offline bookings after unsuccessful phone attempts.

Alternative Solutions Emerge Amid Crisis

Some residents explored unconventional options. Hasan Faisal from Khadra purchased a cylinder on the black market after failing to secure a regular refill. "I bought a cylinder for Rs 1,050 while the regular rate is around Rs 900. In a crisis, we have to manage somehow because there is no supply," he explained.

Residents of Nirala Nagar and Aliganj expressed concerns about existing cylinders running out before scheduled deliveries arrive, despite having booked earlier.

Global Context and Official Response

The panic was partly fueled by broader concerns about commercial LPG cylinder shortages resulting from geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly involving Iran, the US, and Israel, which have impacted global oil supplies.

However, officials from LPG companies maintained that the booking system was functioning normally overall. They suggested consumers utilize alternative digital methods such as:

  • SMS booking services
  • Missed call services
  • Mobile application-based booking

Sources clarified that the IVR system might automatically disconnect if a consumer attempts to book a second refill within 25 days of a previous booking, potentially causing confusion among users.

The situation highlights the critical dependence on digital infrastructure for essential services and the vulnerability of such systems to technical failures during periods of heightened supply concerns.
