Long queues of vehicles were witnessed at petrol pumps across several districts of Odisha on Wednesday, triggering concerns about a possible fuel shortage. However, the state government has categorically denied any shortage and attributed the situation to panic buying by consumers.
Panic Buying Blamed for Queues
According to officials, the sudden rush at petrol pumps was driven by rumors of an impending fuel crisis. Many motorists lined up for hours to fill their tanks, leading to serpentine queues at various stations. The government urged people not to panic and assured that adequate fuel supplies are available.
Government Assurance
State Transport Minister Padmanabha Behera stated that there is no shortage of petrol or diesel in Odisha. He said the public distribution system is functioning normally and that the government is monitoring the situation closely. "We have sufficient stock to meet the demand. People should not resort to panic buying," he added.
The minister also warned of strict action against those spreading rumors about fuel scarcity. He directed district administrations to ensure smooth supply and prevent hoarding.
Impact on Daily Life
The long queues caused inconvenience to commuters and disrupted traffic in several towns. Many motorists expressed frustration over the waiting time. However, with the government's clarification, the situation is expected to normalize soon.
Oil marketing companies have also assured that there is no disruption in supply chains. They advised consumers to purchase fuel as per their regular needs.
