Land Dispute Threatens Global Discovery School Students

Vadodara: The future of students at Global Discovery School (GDS) in Ampad near Sevasi is uncertain due to a dispute between the landowners and the trust operating the institution. Both sides are trading allegations over an arbitration award and pending legal cases.

Landowners' Allegations

On Tuesday, landowners Uttam Patel and Ramesh Patel told the media that the school trust failed to comply with an arbitration award directing it to vacate the premises and clear outstanding dues. They claimed the trust violated a lease agreement by not paying rent on a built-up area of 29,543 square feet. After legal notices in 2018 and subsequent proceedings, the matter went to arbitration following a Gujarat High Court order in September 2023.

The landowners said the arbitrator, on October 4, 2025, ordered the trust to hand over peaceful possession by May 31, 2026, and pay Rs 3.68 crore in outstanding rent with 9% annual interest within 60 days. They alleged the trust has neither vacated nor paid, and parents were not informed about the arbitration.

Concerned for students from pre-primary to Class 10, the landowners submitted representations to the district education officer, district collector, and state education minister. They warned that unresolved issues could affect current and prospective students.

School's Response

Principal Mrunali Macwan said the arbitration award has been challenged in Vadodara district court and is sub judice. She declined to comment on the merits but stressed that no stay or restriction affects school operations. Classes and activities continue normally, and she appealed for responsible communication to avoid unnecessary concern.

Pankaj Bindra, managing director of Global Discovery Academy Pvt Ltd (GDA), said the company supports the institution and its long-term goals. He described the dispute as more than a landlord-tenant issue, involving infrastructure obligations and financial liabilities. Bindra claimed GDA made significant investments and alleged the landowners presented an incomplete picture while judicial proceedings are ongoing.

Bindra reiterated that the school is safe and functional, and GDA will pursue legal remedies.
