Kullu MLA Announces Major Relief Package for Landslide-Hit Area

In a significant development for the residents of Kullu, local MLA Sunder Singh Thakur has announced the approval of Rs 8.35 crore for comprehensive improvement works in the landslide-affected Inner Akhara Bazaar area of Kullu town. This decision brings much-needed relief to nearly 1,000 residents who have been living in constant fear since last year's devastating twin landslides.

Background of the Disaster

The announcement comes nearly six months after the tragic disasters of September 2025, which claimed the lives of 10 people in this densely populated locality. Consecutive landslides on September 2 and 4 buried several houses, trapping people under massive debris and creating a humanitarian crisis that has lingered for months.

The sanctioned funds will be used to implement a Detailed Project Report (DPR) that was already prepared by the concerned department. An official involved in the project explained, "A key strength of the project is that its design will be validated by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), ensuring world-class technical expertise in slope stabilisation."

Comprehensive Project Scope

The ambitious project involves coordination among multiple government departments with two primary objectives:

  • Protecting the area from future disasters through advanced engineering solutions
  • Restoring the locality to a safe and habitable condition for residents

Local residents have long expressed concerns about irregular construction in the upper Matth area and poor drainage systems that have contributed to slope destabilisation. The situation becomes particularly dangerous during rainfall, when stormwater drains directly into sewage chambers, causing continuous leakage that weakens the hillside structure.

Addressing Root Causes

Recognising these critical concerns, MLA Sunder Singh Thakur has directed the Jal Shakti Department to immediately repair the leaking chambers that have been exacerbating the landslide risk. The official added, "A comprehensive assessment is underway for a long-term solution to drainage and sewage issues in the Matth area. Additionally, a separate proposal worth over Rs 7 crore was prepared specifically for rainwater management."

This multi-pronged approach demonstrates a commitment to addressing both immediate safety concerns and long-term infrastructure challenges that have plagued the area for years.
