Kolkata Voters Anxiously Await Supplementary Electoral List Amid Judicial Scrutiny

In Kolkata, voters placed under adjudication have already begun contacting their booth-level officers (BLOs) to inquire about checking their names, even before the publication of the supplementary list. These long-time voters are experiencing significant anxiety over whether their names will appear on the electoral roll following judicial scrutiny. Many have decided to closely monitor the Election Commission of India's website to access the list and learn the final outcome of their SIR (Summary Revision) battle.

High-Level Meetings Ensure Law and Order Preparations

Multiple crucial meetings were chaired by Calcutta High Court Chief Justice Sujoy Paul on Thursday, ahead of the publication of the first supplementary voter list for approximately 60 lakh Bengal voters under "judicial scrutiny." The initial meeting involved the state police top brass, followed by a session with Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Aggarwal. These discussions were specifically aimed at assessing and reinforcing law and order arrangements to ensure a smooth process.

Earlier on Thursday morning, key officials including Bengal Home Secretary Sanghamitra Ghosh, DGP SN Gupta, Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand, and ADG (Law and Order) Ajey Mukund Ranade met with Chief Justice Paul for nearly 30 minutes. Around noon, these officers, accompanied by Chief Secretary Dushyant Nariyala, called on Governor RN Ravi for another 30-minute meeting. Later in the evening, CEO Manoj Aggarwal also met with the Chief Justice to finalize preparations.

Voter Experiences and Concerns Highlighted

Gouri Aich, an elector from the Bhowanipore Assembly constituency, was informed during her hearing at Survey Building that her logical discrepancy would be resolved based on the documents she submitted. "On February 28, I discovered that my name was under adjudication, and the BLO could not provide a reason," Aich explained. "Since the BLO is the primary contact for the SIR exercise, I called her this morning to inquire about the supplementary list, which may be published on Friday. The BLO assured me she would inform me if my name appears."

Anubhav Das, an MBBS student at SSKM and a resident of Ballygunge, has decided to vigilantly monitor the ECI's website for the supplementary list. "I did not receive any hearing call regarding SIR logical discrepancy but found my name under adjudication. The BLO collected passport copies of me and my parents for scrutiny. Although there is no clarity on when the supplementary list will be released, I will keep an eye on the ECI's website to access it," he stated.

Soma Sadhukan, a voter under adjudication from Alipore, expressed her frustration, saying, "I have been living in the city since 1961, but this time I could not clear the SIR test. I am awaiting judicial scrutiny to approve me as an eligible voter, and I am eagerly waiting for the supplementary list."

Election Commission's Timeline and Transparency Issues

The Election Commission earlier indicated that the first supplementary list would be published on Friday or Saturday. However, the EC has not explicitly clarified where voters can access this list, adding to the uncertainty and anxiety among the electorate. This lack of transparency has compelled voters to rely heavily on BLOs and personal monitoring of official channels.

The supplementary list is part of a broader effort to ensure the integrity of the electoral roll through judicial scrutiny, addressing discrepancies and validating voter eligibility. The process underscores the critical role of BLOs as intermediaries between the Election Commission and voters, especially in resolving issues related to the SIR exercise.

As Kolkata voters navigate this period of uncertainty, the combined efforts of the judiciary, election officials, and law enforcement aim to maintain order and facilitate a fair electoral process. The outcome of this scrutiny will determine the voting rights of thousands, highlighting the importance of accurate and timely publication of the supplementary list.
