Kolkata PWD Implements Road Safety Measures with Iron Grilles on VIP Road
The Public Works Department (PWD) in Kolkata has taken a significant step to enhance road safety by installing iron grilles along the airport-bound flank of VIP Road. This initiative targets specific sections stretching from Golaghata to Lake Town, where the grilles are placed between the service road and the main flank to fence off identified traffic black spots.
Addressing Jaywalking and Accident Risks
According to PWD officials, the installation of permanent fencing is part of comprehensive road safety measures developed in consultation with the Bidhannagar Traffic Police. A PWD official explained, "It was noticed that, with no fencing on the sides of these specific stretches, jaywalking occurred frequently, significantly increasing the risk of accidents. These traffic dark spots were carefully identified, and fencing is being implemented to prevent such dangerous pedestrian crossings."
The primary goal is to curb unmanned pedestrian crossings on this high-speed corridor, which has been a persistent issue leading to safety concerns. An officer highlighted, "Previously, there were a few major accidents on both the service road and the main flank. The traffic black spots were pinpointed between Golaghata and Bangur, making this intervention crucial."
Building on Past Safety Efforts
This new fencing project follows earlier safety enhancements on VIP Road. For instance, the stretch from Bangur to Dum Dum Park on the airport-bound flank was fenced off several years ago when a biodiversity park was established. The current efforts extend this protective barrier to additional vulnerable sections.
To balance safety with commuter convenience, traffic police have ensured that cuts are made in the fencing. These allow pedestrians to access bus stops from the service road to the main flank between Golaghata and Bangur. Additionally, at the Lake Town crossing, guard rails have been installed by the police to prevent pedestrian crossovers and direct people toward the subway entrance at the clock tower-end.
Future Plans for VIP Road
Looking ahead, the PWD is also working on plans to install aesthetically designed fencing along the median of the entire VIP Road, which connects Ultadanga with the airport. This broader initiative aims to further improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety across the corridor, complementing the current grille installations.
Key aspects of this safety drive include:
- Targeted fencing at high-risk zones between Golaghata and Lake Town.
- Collaboration with Bidhannagar Traffic Police for data-driven interventions.
- Integration of convenience features like access cuts for bus stops.
- Expansion of safety measures to medians in future projects.
By addressing jaywalking and accident-prone areas, these measures are expected to reduce risks on one of Kolkata's key arterial roads, ensuring safer travel for all users.
