Kolkata Hospital Tragedy Ignites Political Firestorm Over Administrative Lapses
In a tragic incident that has escalated into a major political controversy, the death of a patient at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has drawn sharp criticism from both ruling and opposition parties. The case has highlighted deep-seated issues in the state's healthcare administration and sparked a heated exchange between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
TMC MLA Points to Systemic Administrative Failure
Trinamool Congress MLA and deputy mayor Atin Ghosh, who is also a member of the Rogi Kalyan Samity (Patient Welfare Committee), squarely blamed the fatality on local administrative failure. Ghosh revealed that the committee has not held a proper meeting in a considerable period, indicating a breakdown in oversight mechanisms.
"I will call for an emergency meeting on Monday. A preliminary investigation report must be submitted. We need to see what measures the administration needs to take to prevent such incidents in the future. Everyone must be vigilant. This incident is due to local administrative failure, which cannot be denied," Ghosh asserted on Friday.
BJP Leader Alleges Murder, Blames State Government
In a starkly contrasting response, BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari labeled the incident as "murder" and directly implicated the West Bengal government. Adhikari claimed that the elevator at the hospital, where the victim died, was under maintenance at the time, suggesting intentional negligence.
"I have documents with me that they intentionally killed (the man) using a lift that was being repaired. A case of murder should be immediately registered in the matter," Adhikari told reporters during a campaign event in Mahishadal, East Midnapore.
Victim Identified as Active TMC Worker
The deceased has been identified as Arup Banerjee, a 40-year-old contractual worker with the South Dum Dum Municipality. Banerjee was an active member of the Trinamool Congress, serving as an assistant booth level agent and playing a key role in the Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) process.
Local party functionary Trinath Das from Dum Dum expressed grief, stating, "He was an ardent Trinamool worker and, above all, a wonderful human being. We still can't believe he died such a tragic death. He will always be missed."
BJP's Bengal Unit Criticizes Government Negligence
The BJP's state unit in West Bengal has intensified its attack on the TMC-led dispensation, accusing the government of gross negligence towards the healthcare system. They highlighted that RG Kar hospital has repeatedly made headlines for similar incidents, underscoring a pattern of administrative lapses.
