Kolkata's Bailey Bridge Trial Run Extended Ahead of Full Opening

The Bidhannagar traffic police in Kolkata have announced an extension of the ongoing trial run for the newly constructed Bailey bridge, which links Salt Lake AA Block with VIP Road near Dakshindari. This extension will last for a few more days before the bridge is officially opened to round-way traffic, according to a senior traffic police officer.

Final Inspection and Traffic Plans

A final inspection is scheduled to take place in the coming days to assess the bridge's readiness for full-scale operation. Currently, the trial run is conducted daily from 9 am to 9 pm, but authorities aim to eventually keep the bridge open for 24-hour, both-way traffic movement. The idea is to ensure seamless connectivity for commuters, an officer stated, emphasizing the goal of round-the-clock access.

Vehicle Restrictions and Safety Measures

During the trial, police are evaluating which types of vehicles will be permitted to use the bridge. Proposals include installing height bars to prevent heavy vehicles from accessing the structure, as the canal-side road on the Salt Lake-end at AA Block is not wide enough to accommodate large vehicles entering from VIP Road. This measure aims to enhance safety and prevent congestion, officials explained.

Traffic Surveillance and Challenges

To manage the complex traffic flow, authorities highlight the need for 24-hour surveillance at a critical spot where airport-bound vehicles from Salt Lake cross VIP Road's city-bound flank. These vehicles use the bridge, take a median cut-out, and turn right to join the airport-bound lane. Ensuring smooth movement here is crucial to avoid bottlenecks, an officer noted, pointing out the logistical challenges involved in integrating the bridge into the existing road network.

The extension of the trial run allows for further assessment and adjustments before the bridge becomes fully operational, promising improved connectivity for Kolkata residents.
