Kolhapur Villagers Stage Massive Protest Demanding Priest Removal at Jyotiba Temple

In a significant demonstration of public discontent, thousands of residents from Parite and surrounding villages in Karvir tehsil of Kolhapur district organized a protest march on Monday morning. The procession commenced from Dasara Chowk and proceeded directly to the district collectorate, with participants vociferously demanding the immediate removal of priests from the revered Jyotiba temple.

Background of the Temple Clash and Subsequent Tensions

The roots of this protest trace back to an unfortunate incident on March 22, when devotees from Parite village visited the Jyotiba temple carrying traditional Sasankathi offerings. During their visit, a heated altercation erupted between the devotees and the temple priests, escalating into a physical confrontation. Following the clash, both parties filed formal complaints against each other, leading to police registering cases against 17 individuals from each side.

In the aftermath of the FIR registration, tensions remained high. Parite village observed a complete shutdown for an entire day, while shops surrounding the temple complex remained closed following a call made by the priests themselves. This series of events created a charged atmosphere in the region, culminating in Monday's organized protest march.

Villagers Defy Administration Request to Stage Protest

Despite explicit requests from the district administration to refrain from organizing the march, villagers proceeded with their demonstration. The timing is particularly sensitive as the annual pilgrimage to Jyotiba temple has commenced, with April 1 marking the main day of the traditional march. This convergence of religious activity and public protest created a complex situation for local authorities.

Vijay alias Manoj Dhondiram Patil, the sarpanch of Parite village, articulated the protesters' position clearly: "The FIR against the devotees from our village is fundamentally wrong because they were severely beaten by the priests. We are not targeting the entire priest community at the temple, but those who participated in the violent act must be dismissed by the administration."

Patil further elaborated on their demands, suggesting that "the government should appoint priests through a formal process similar to the system implemented at Pandharpur's Vitthal-Rukhmini temple." He emphasized that this incident was not isolated, noting that "priests have been troubling devotees coming from across the state for some time."

Political Support and Official Response

The protest march saw active participation from villagers carrying placards with messages demanding priest removal. The demonstration gained political traction when Rahul Patil, a Shiv Sena leader from Karvir tehsil, extended his support to the villagers' demands and was physically present during the march.

District Collector Amol Yedge addressed the protesters' delegation, providing assurances that he would "thoroughly study the issue and take appropriate action based on the findings to ensure such incidents never recur at Jyotiba temple." His commitment to investigating the matter provided some temporary reassurance to the aggrieved villagers.

Innovative Security Measures for Temple Fair

In a related development, District Collector Yedge, who also serves as administrator of the Paschim Maharashtra Devasthan Samiti (PMDS), announced groundbreaking security measures for the ongoing temple fair. For the first time, Artificial Intelligence technology will be deployed during the religious gathering, primarily to identify and restrain individuals with criminal records who might attempt to trouble devotees.

Yedge explained the dual purpose of this technological intervention: "The AI system will not only help identify potential troublemakers but will also be utilized to locate missing persons during the crowded fair." This innovative approach represents a significant step toward modernizing security protocols at major religious events in the region.

The situation remains fluid as authorities balance maintaining religious harmony, addressing legitimate grievances, and implementing technological solutions to prevent future conflicts at one of Maharashtra's most important pilgrimage sites.
