The Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Kolhapur has announced a detailed inspection program for sleeper-coach buses operating across Maharashtra. This decisive action comes in response to a series of alarming fire incidents that have endangered passenger safety throughout the state.

On Monday, a sleeper bus caught fire in Sangli, completely destroying important documents belonging to two women candidates who were returning from police recruitment examinations. This incident follows another tragic event where a passenger lost their life after a bus traveling via the Samruddhi Expressway from Mumbai to Buldhana went up in flames. Several similar fire incidents were reported throughout last year as well, highlighting a persistent safety concern.

Transport officials have identified negligence toward mandatory safety norms as a primary factor behind these dangerous fires. "In most cases, negligence toward mandatory safety norms has been identified as a major factor behind such fires, many of which occur while buses are in motion," stated an official familiar with the investigation. "Sleeper coaches typically operate on long-distance routes, and continuous electrical load significantly increases the risk of fire due to wiring or short-circuit issues."
Comprehensive Inspection Parameters
Assistant Regional Transport Officer Chandrakant Mane provided specific details about the upcoming inspection program. "The buses will be inspected on 26 parameters laid down under the Motor Vehicles Act," he explained. "There are approximately 370 sleeper-coach buses in Kolhapur district alone, and they operate both within Maharashtra and to other states."
Bus owners have been given a deadline of March 31 to present their vehicles for inspection at the RTO. The inspection service will be provided free of charge to encourage compliance. If any safety features are found to be missing during the inspection, owners will receive immediate instructions to install them.
