Congress leaders have declared their intention to launch a chain hunger strike outside the civic headquarters starting Thursday, should the government fail to approve recruitment for numerous vacant positions within the next forty-eight hours.

Rajesh Latkar, the leader of opposition in Kolhapur Municipal Corporation, has highlighted the severe operational challenges facing the civic body due to extensive staff shortages. According to Latkar, the corporation is currently operating with significant vacancies across essential departments, creating a cascade of administrative and functional problems.
"The Kolhapur Municipal Corporation is facing a critical human resource crisis," Latkar stated emphatically. "There are numerous vacant posts that remain unfilled, including positions for engineers, sanitation workers, and surveyors. Many departments are being managed by temporary in-charges, while several existing engineers are burdened with handling two to three additional responsibilities beyond their designated roles."
This staffing deficit, Latkar explained, has far-reaching consequences for municipal operations. "The current situation negatively impacts overall functioning, leads to substantial delays in project completion, creates opportunities for corruption, and ultimately compromises the quality of work delivered to citizens," he elaborated.
Disparity in Recruitment Approvals Raises Questions
Adding to the frustration of Congress corporators is what they perceive as discriminatory treatment in the recruitment approval process. Latkar pointed out that the organizational structures for Kolhapur Municipal Corporation, along with those of Sangli, Amravati, Sambhajinagar, and Akola municipal corporations, were approved simultaneously several months ago.
"While recruitment approvals have been issued for the other municipal corporations, the proposals for Kolhapur remain inexplicably pending," Latkar noted with evident frustration. "This disparity raises serious questions about the government's priorities and fairness in administrative processes."
The political dimension of the issue was not lost on the opposition leader. "There is a Mahayuti government in the state, and the same alliance holds power in the municipal corporation. Both MLAs from Kolhapur North and South constituencies belong to the Mahayuti alliance. They frequently claim to bring development funds to the region. Given this political alignment, why has the recruitment approval for Kolhapur not been expedited?" Latkar questioned pointedly.
Congress Issues Forty-Eight-Hour Ultimatum
Supporting the demand for immediate action, Congress group leader Indrajit Bondre emphasized that key municipal posts have remained vacant for an extended period. "These critical positions have been unfilled for the last three to four years, which is unacceptable for a growing urban center like Kolhapur," Bondre stated firmly.
Bondre suggested that the prolonged delay must have underlying reasons that need to be addressed transparently. "There must be some specific reason behind this extended delay in filling essential positions. If these posts are not approved for recruitment within the next forty-eight hours, all Congress corporators will initiate a chain hunger strike in front of the municipal corporation building," he declared unequivocally.
