In a significant breakthrough, the Uttar Pradesh police have busted a gang of Kinnar (transgender) individuals accused of robbing women in Lucknow. Three members of the gang were arrested on charges of public nudity, extortion, and theft. According to the police, the gang exploited their identity as Kinnars to pressure victims, particularly women, into handing over cash or jewellery.
Modus Operandi of the Gang
The gang would approach women in public places, often in crowded markets or near temples. They would then create a scene by removing their clothes, causing panic among the victims. Taking advantage of the confusion and fear, the gang members would snatch purses, mobile phones, and other valuables. In some cases, they threatened to accuse the victims of harassment if they resisted, forcing them to comply.
Police Investigation and Arrests
The arrests were made following a series of complaints from women in the city. A special team was formed to investigate the incidents, and CCTV footage from the areas helped identify the suspects. The three arrested individuals have been identified as residents of Lucknow and nearby areas. They have been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including robbery, extortion, and public indecency.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Lucknow stated, “We have zero tolerance for such crimes. The accused misused their identity to commit crimes, and they will face the full force of the law.” The police also urged victims to come forward and report any similar incidents without fear.
Community Reactions and Safety Concerns
The incident has sparked a debate about safety for women in public spaces. Local residents expressed shock and concern over the brazen nature of the crimes. Many women have called for increased police patrolling and stricter action against such gangs. At the same time, members of the Kinnar community have condemned the actions of the arrested individuals, stating that they tarnish the reputation of the entire community.
Legal Proceedings and Next Steps
The arrested individuals are currently in police custody and will be produced before a local court. The police are investigating whether the gang has any other members at large and if they were involved in similar crimes in other cities. Further investigations are underway to trace the stolen property and recover it for the victims.
