Senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, has firmly denied any confusion within the party's top leadership regarding a potential change of chief minister in Karnataka. He stated that such speculation is being fuelled internally by state leaders themselves.
Congress is a Collective Effort, Not a One-Person Show
Addressing media persons in Kalaburagi on Sunday, Kharge delivered a strong message to party workers and leaders. He asserted that the Congress party was not built by any single individual and cautioned against narratives crediting the party's electoral success in Karnataka to one person alone. He emphasised that the grand old party has grown over the years through the combined hard work of countless leaders and workers.
"The Congress has not been built by any single individual," Kharge stated, warning against claims that the party's return to power in the state was due to one person. He reiterated that every member has a crucial role in strengthening the organisation.
No Information on Delhi Visits or Letters
When questioned about Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar's reported visit to Delhi on December 23 concerning the chief ministerial position, Kharge said he had no information about such a trip. This visit has been a major source of speculation regarding a possible leadership shift in the southern state.
Furthermore, Kharge addressed queries about a letter allegedly written by Congress functionary Sudarshan, which reportedly highlighted confusion over the leadership issue. The Rajya Sabha leader clarified that he had not received any such letter. He added that he would examine the matter and understand its intent only after it reaches him formally.
Kharge Criticises Centre's Approach to MGNREGA
Shifting focus to national affairs, Kharge expressed his disappointment with the recently concluded Parliament session. While acknowledging that several discussions were held and bills passed, he lamented that adequate discussion on the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) was not allowed.
He launched a sharp critique against the central government, accusing it of neglecting the crucial rural job guarantee scheme. Kharge alleged that the Centre is attempting to introduce an alternative like the 'Right to Work' and stated that the Congress would oppose such moves across the country.
He also questioned the rationale behind renaming central schemes. "I could not understand what was achieved by changing the name of MGNREGA," Kharge said. He accused the Modi government of initially opposing schemes launched during the UPA regime, only to later implement them under new names. He alleged that the Union government lacks a long-term vision and is indulging in anti-constitutional activities.
