Former Telangana CM KCR Seeks New Date for SIT Questioning in Phone Tapping Probe

In a significant development in the ongoing phone tapping investigation, former Telangana Chief Minister and BRS president K Chandrashekar Rao has formally requested a fresh date for his questioning by the Special Investigation Team (SIT). This comes in response to the notice issued by the SIT on Thursday, which had summoned him for examination on January 30.

Election Commitments Prompt Date Change Request

KCR has cited his pre-occupation with the upcoming municipal elections scheduled for February 11 as the primary reason for seeking an alternative date. January 30 marks the last date for filing nominations for these elections, a critical deadline that requires his full attention and presence. The former chief minister has assured investigators that he will extend full cooperation to the probe, emphasizing his commitment to the legal process despite the scheduling conflict.

Request for Examination at Farmhouse Location

In addition to requesting a new date, KCR has sought permission for the questioning to be conducted at his farmhouse in Erravelli. This request aligns with provisions made by the investigators themselves, who had offered him the option to choose a location within Hyderabad for the examination. Considering his age, the SIT had explicitly stated that KCR was not required to attend the police station compulsorily, in strict compliance with Section 160 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).

Background of the Phone Tapping Case

The SIT notice to KCR stems from a comprehensive probe into alleged illegal phone tapping that occurred during the previous BRS government. Investigators have stated that their findings so far indicate KCR is "acquainted with facts and circumstances relevant to the case", making his examination necessary for further investigation.

The case involves serious allegations of unauthorized surveillance targeting multiple individuals, including:

  • Present Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and his family members
  • Senior BJP member Eatala Rajender
  • Union Minister Bandi Sanjay
  • Medak MP M Raghunandan Rao
  • Various other politicians and businessmen

Current Status of the Investigation

To expedite the probe, the state government constituted a nine-member SIT in the last week of December 2025, headed by Hyderabad Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar. Most of the accused in the case have been arrested and subsequently released on bail, with the exception of Prabhakar Rao and Sravan Kumar. The investigation continues to unfold as authorities work to establish the full extent of the alleged surveillance activities and identify all responsible parties.

The developments highlight the ongoing legal challenges facing the former chief minister while simultaneously managing his political responsibilities during a crucial election period. The SIT's response to KCR's requests for a new date and alternative location will determine the next steps in this high-profile investigation that has captured significant public and political attention across Telangana.
