Former BJP Leader Calls for Transparency in Karnataka's Financial Affairs
In a significant development from Mangaluru, former BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel has strongly urged the Karnataka government, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, to release a comprehensive white paper detailing the state's budget. Addressing Allegations of Discrimination
Speaking to reporters in Mangaluru on Monday, Kateel firmly dismissed the Karnataka government's claims of discrimination by the Centre towards the state, labeling these allegations as entirely baseless. He referenced the recent statements made by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during her visit to Bengaluru, where she clarified that the Centre has not shown any bias in tax devolution. Kateel questioned why Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has not responded to these clarifications, highlighting a gap in communication between the state and central governments.
Contractors' Bills and Financial Burden
The issue of pending bills for contractors, amounting to a staggering Rs 37,370 crore, has become a focal point in this debate. While the state government has pointed fingers at the Centre for these delays, Kateel attributed the failure to clear these bills solely to administrative shortcomings within the Karnataka administration. He warned that if this situation persists, the state might soon struggle to disburse salaries to government employees, indicating a potential financial crisis.
Kateel criticized Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for not properly assessing the state's financial status before announcing the five guarantee schemes. He argued that the financial burden arising from these schemes has pushed Karnataka towards a state of bankruptcy, and instead of addressing internal issues, the chief minister is attempting to shift blame onto the Centre.

He further noted that Karnataka's share in taxes and duties from the Union government's tax pool has actually increased, contradicting claims of reduced central support.

When questioned about the objections raised by the Congress party regarding the VB-G RAM G scheme, particularly the removal of Mahatma Gandhi's name, Kateel provided a nuanced explanation. He emphasized that the new scheme includes the word 'Ram' in its title and is fundamentally based on Mahatma Gandhi's concept of Ram Rajya, reflecting his deep reverence for Lord Ram.
