In a significant move for the cooperative sector in Karnataka, District Minister Satish Jarkiholi has committed the state government to formulating supportive policies for Souharda cooperative societies. The assurance came during a major event in Belagavi, highlighting the government's focus on balancing regulation with growth.
Government's Assurance and Regulatory Balance
Addressing a large gathering on Sunday, Minister Satish Jarkiholi provided a clear roadmap for the government's engagement with the cooperative movement. The occasion was the valedictory function of the silver jubilee celebrations for the Souharda Cooperative Movement, held at the KLE Centenary Convention Centre in Belagavi.
Jarkiholi acknowledged that while a certain degree of government oversight is necessary, it will not be allowed to obstruct the functioning of these societies. The minister's foremost priority is ensuring the safety of depositors' money. He promised detailed discussions on the demands put forth by the societies and stated he would personally lead a delegation to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to ensure their concerns are addressed effectively.
Leaders Emphasize Social and Economic Role
The event saw several prominent figures underscore the historic and ongoing importance of cooperatives. MLA Laxman Savadi urged cooperative societies to design and implement schemes specifically aimed at uplifting the economic condition of the poor. He pledged his unwavering support for these institutions.
Women and Child Development Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar elevated the discourse, describing service within the cooperative sector as a form of divine service. She noted the vital role cooperatives have played in strengthening the financial footing of economically weaker sections of society.
Historical Context and Cautions
Adding a historical perspective, former Rajya Sabha member Prabhakar Kore reminded the audience that the cooperative movement in India has been vibrant for over 120 years. However, he also sounded a note of caution against imposing excessive government control, which could stifle the sector's dynamism.
Echoing the local significance, former legislative council member Mahantesh Kavatagimath pointed out Belagavi's deep and historic ties to the cooperative movement. He credited several stalwarts from the district for their substantial contributions to the growth and national recognition of the sector.
The collective message from the event was one of reinforced partnership. The Karnataka government, through Minister Jarkiholi's assurances, has signaled its intent to create an enabling policy environment. This approach aims to safeguard depositor interests while empowering Souharda cooperatives to continue their essential work in driving financial inclusion and economic empowerment across the state.
