Karnataka MLA Karemma Nayak Faces Threats from Sand Mafia; Home Minister Assures Protection

In a concerning development from Karnataka, JD(S) MLA Karemma Nayak has reported facing persistent threats from illegal sand miners in her Devadurga Assembly constituency. The issue came to light during a recent Assembly session, highlighting the ongoing challenges in combating illegal sand mining activities in the state.

MLA's Statement on Threats and Illegal Mining

MLA Karemma Nayak revealed that she has been receiving threats due to her efforts to curb illegal sand mining in her constituency. She explained that her attempts to address this issue were driven by the negative impact on local farmers and infrastructure.

"I had tried to put an end to illegal sand mining in an honest manner, as it was affecting crops grown by farmers along the banks of the Krishna river," Nayak stated. "The unregulated movement of sand-laden vehicles has also left the roads along the banks in a poor shape."

She further detailed that those involved in sand mining had sent people to her house, threatened her, and created disturbances. Nayak emphasized that she has constantly faced threats because of her attempts to end illegal mining and other crimes in her Assembly constituency.

Legislature Party Leader Raises Concerns

JD(S) legislature party leader C B Suresh Babu brought attention to a recent video showing several people gheraoing MLA Nayak's house. "This is really concerning," he said, while demanding adequate security for the legislator. This visual evidence underscored the seriousness of the threats faced by the MLA.

Home Minister's Response and Assurance

Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara responded to these concerns during the Assembly session, acknowledging that illegal sand mining has become a significant menace in the state. He revealed that leaders from all political parties are involved in this lucrative business.

"It is a big business where influential people are involved. I have given only a restricted answer about it," the minister told the Assembly, noting the challenges involved in preventing illegal sand mining activities.

In response to the specific threats against MLA Nayak, Home Minister Parameshwara assured that the government would provide her with adequate security and ensure she does not face any problems. "If there are any lapses, I will take action against the officials responsible," he promised.

Broader Context and Government Action

The home minister provided additional context about the government's efforts to combat illegal sand mining. He mentioned that over the past three years, more than 25 people have been exiled from the district for their involvement in such activities. This indicates ongoing enforcement actions against those engaged in illegal sand extraction.

The situation highlights the complex nature of illegal sand mining in Karnataka, where economic interests often clash with environmental concerns and public welfare. The threats against an elected representative bring into sharp focus the challenges faced by those attempting to enforce regulations against powerful mining interests.

As the government promises enhanced security for MLA Nayak, questions remain about the broader measures needed to effectively curb illegal sand mining across the state and protect those who stand against such activities.
