Former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai resigned from the party on Friday, announcing his intention to launch a new political movement. He expressed a desire to end what he termed 'cult and dynastic' politics in the state.
Resignation Letter Details
In his resignation letter dated June 2, addressed to BJP chief Nitin Nabin, Annamalai wrote, 'I do not want to burden the top leadership any further with my ongoing thoughts on the way forward for a growth-oriented and culturally rooted politics in Tamil Nadu.'
Motivation for Joining BJP
The former IPS officer, popularly known as 'Singham' for his assertive political style, stated that he joined the BJP six years ago with the aim of bringing 'positive change' to Tamil Nadu, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. He wanted to 'change the notion of politics.'
Critique of Dominant Parties
Reflecting on the decades-long dominance of the DMK and AIADMK, Annamalai said the people of Tamil Nadu had 'yearned for change' and were 'fatigued by the general political discourse for many decades.' He noted that several attempts at political change over the past decade 'could not hold their ground and quickly faded from people's memories.'
Criticism of National Parties
Annamalai expressed concern that 'national parties never spoke the language that people in Tamil Nadu understand,' suggesting that the BJP and other national parties often fail to connect with local aspirations. He emphasized, 'I firmly believe that a strong and united India is built upon the strength, dignity and aspirations of its many regions and communities.'
Political Context
The resignation comes a month after the Tamil Nadu assembly election results, where newcomer Vijay outperformed established Dravidian parties like the DMK and AIADMK. The BJP remains a relatively weak force in Tamil Nadu, having won only one seat in the recent elections. Annamalai had emerged as one of the party's most influential faces in the state.
Party Response
Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagendran dismissed the notion that Annamalai's exit would be a major setback, stating that his resignation was 'not a loss' for the party.
Annamalai's resignation marks a significant development in Tamil Nadu politics and for the BJP's presence in the state. His planned new political movement is expected to focus on growth-oriented and culturally rooted politics, challenging the established Dravidian parties.
