Jharkhand's Premier Eight-Lane Highway Plagued by Repeated Subsidence Incidents
Commuters and residents in Dhanbad have expressed serious concerns regarding the structural integrity of Jharkhand's first eight-lane highway following multiple incidents of road subsidence along its 20-kilometer stretch. The highway, which connects Govindpur to Kako Math in Dhanbad, was constructed by the State Highways Authority of Jharkhand with financial assistance from the World Bank.
Inauguration Quickly Followed by Structural Failures
The ambitious infrastructure project was inaugurated with much fanfare by Chief Minister Hemant Soren in October 2024. However, within just two months of its opening to the public, the first instance of road caving was reported. Since that initial failure, at least six separate subsidence incidents have occurred at various locations along the highway corridor.
The most recent incident occurred on Wednesday when a significant crater approximately eight feet wide and four feet deep developed near Dharjodi, temporarily disrupting traffic flow. The Dhanbad administration responded promptly by filling the dangerous pit and restoring vehicular movement, but the recurring nature of these failures has raised alarm among local residents and officials alike.
Political Fallout and Corruption Allegations
The highway's structural problems have now entered the political arena, with local BJP MLA Raj Sinha raising pointed questions about construction quality during a state assembly session. Sinha demanded a thorough investigation into the highway's repeated subsidence, characterizing the situation as "a live example of corruption" that requires immediate scrutiny.
"The concerned minister has assured an investigation into this matter," Sinha stated, highlighting the growing political pressure surrounding the infrastructure project. Several other local leaders have joined the call for a high-level investigation, alleging potential lapses in both execution and monitoring during the highway's construction phase.
Public Safety Concerns and Official Response
Local residents have voiced fears that the recurring subsidence could lead to a major accident if not addressed comprehensively. Many have questioned the accountability of both the state government and the highways authority responsible for the project's oversight and maintenance.
Dhanbad Deputy Commissioner Aditya Ranjan addressed the situation, confirming that all affected patches have been repaired to ensure smooth traffic flow. However, he acknowledged that further measures may be necessary if the subsidence problem persists, indicating that temporary repairs may not address underlying structural issues.
The repeated failures of this high-profile infrastructure project have cast doubt on construction standards and oversight mechanisms, with the World Bank-funded highway now serving as a focal point for discussions about infrastructure quality and governance in Jharkhand.
