IUML Leader Noorbina Rasheed Resigns Over Vanitha League Neglect in Candidate Selection
In a significant development within the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), senior leader Noorbina Rasheed has resigned from her position as the national general secretary of the Vanitha League, the party's women's wing. Her resignation comes as a protest against what she describes as severe neglect of the Vanitha League in the selection of candidates for the upcoming elections.
Background of the Resignation
Noorbina Rasheed, a prominent figure in IUML, cited frustration over the party's handling of candidate nominations, particularly regarding women candidates. Despite IUML fielding two women candidates in this election cycle—the highest number in its history—Rasheed argued that these selections did not involve or represent the Vanitha League adequately.
The two women candidates nominated by IUML are Jayanthi Rajan, who will contest from the Kuthuparamba constituency in Kannur, and Fathima Thahiliya, who is set to run from the Perambra constituency in Kozhikode. Rasheed emphasized that many qualified women leaders from the Vanitha League were overlooked in favor of these two candidates, raising concerns about internal party dynamics and representation.
Controversy Over Candidate Selection
Rasheed revealed that the Vanitha League had specifically opposed the nomination of Fathima Thahiliya, citing her involvement in the Haritha controversy. This opposition was reportedly ignored by the party leadership, further exacerbating tensions. Rasheed's resignation highlights a deeper issue within IUML regarding the autonomy and influence of its women's wing in political decision-making.
However, in a clarifying statement, Rasheed assured that she would not be leaving the IUML party itself. She remains committed to the party but expressed her dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs within the Vanitha League, urging for more inclusive and respectful treatment of women members in candidate selection processes.
Party Response and Disciplinary Action
In response to Rasheed's resignation, IUML state general secretary PMA Salam issued a strong statement, labeling her act as a serious violation of party discipline. Salam announced that a formal notice would be sent to Rasheed seeking an explanation for her actions. This move underscores the party's stance on maintaining internal order and adherence to its protocols, even as it navigates internal dissent.
Historical Context and Previous Electoral Experience
Noorbina Rasheed is no stranger to electoral politics within IUML. In 2021, she contested as an IUML candidate in the Kozhikode South constituency but was defeated by INL candidate Ahmed Devarkovil. This experience adds context to her current grievances, as she has firsthand knowledge of the challenges faced by women candidates within the party structure.
The resignation of Noorbina Rasheed from her Vanitha League role marks a pivotal moment for IUML, bringing to light ongoing issues of gender representation and internal party democracy. As the party prepares for the elections, this incident could influence its strategies and relationships with women voters and members.
