In a shocking incident highlighting political tensions in Rajasthan, independent candidate Naresh Meena was allegedly attacked on Saturday evening in the Baran district. The attack occurred as Meena was returning from a condolence meeting, sparking immediate violence and retaliatory actions in the area.
Details of the Attack
The incident took place around 4:30 pm in the Baran Sadar police station area. According to reports, former Aakhedi gram panchayat sarpanch Tolaram, along with his two sons and approximately 8-10 other individuals, intercepted Meena's vehicle near Tolaram's house in Aakhedi village. The group allegedly attacked the vehicle with sticks.
While Naresh Meena escaped unhurt, the windows of his car were completely smashed. Meena further claimed that one of the assailants was armed with a pistol, raising the severity of the assault. Meena had recently contested as an independent candidate against Congress MLA and former minister Pramod Jain Bhaya in the Anta assembly by-election.
Aftermath and Retaliatory Violence
The attack quickly led to a flare-up of tension in the locality. Supporters of Naresh Meena allegedly gathered at Tolaram's house, pelting stones and setting a parked car on fire. However, Meena presented a counter-narrative, alleging that the accused themselves set the vehicle ablaze as part of a conspiracy to falsely implicate him and his supporters.
Police teams rushed to the spot to control the volatile situation and prevent further escalation. DSP Baran City, Hariram Soni, confirmed that Tolaram, his two sons, and five others were detained for questioning in connection with the incident. "Both sides were involved in the clash. We are recording statements and examining evidence," the DSP stated.
Allegations and Police Investigation
Naresh Meena made serious allegations against the detained individuals, claiming that Tolaram and his sons have a criminal background and were previously booked in murder and firing cases. He alleged they enjoyed protection due to their association with MLA Pramod Jain Bhaya. These allegations have not been independently verified.
Police officials indicated that cross cases would be registered after the completion of the preliminary investigation. As a precautionary measure, additional police force has been deployed in the area to maintain law and order.
"The situation is now under control and normalcy has been restored," assured DSP Hariram Soni, adding that further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
