A tragic road accident in Manipur's Imphal East district on Friday has claimed the life of a young girl who was already displaced by the state's ethnic violence. The incident occurred when a speeding van ploughed into a group of students returning home after their final examinations.
Details of the Sawombung Tragedy
The fatal collision took place around 11:30 am in the Sawombung area. According to sources, the students were walking back from school when the out-of-control van hit them. The impact proved fatal for one student and left another seriously injured.
The deceased has been identified as Ngangbam Sanathoi, a Class V student. Her story is one of compounded tragedy. Sanathoi had been living at a relief camp in Sawombung after her family was forced to flee their home in Sanakeithel, Ukhrul district, during the violence that erupted in May 2023. The injured child is a Class III student hailing from Wairi Mamang Leikai in Imphal East and is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.
Official Response and Police Action
Law enforcement acted swiftly following the incident. The driver of the van has been apprehended and is currently detained at the Lamlai Police Station. The vehicle involved has also been seized by the authorities. An First Information Report (FIR) has been officially registered to begin legal proceedings.
The Manipur government expressed profound sorrow over the heartbreaking event. State Home Commissioner N Ashok Kumar issued a statement conveying the administration's deep grief and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. In a significant gesture, the commissioner announced a relief assistance of Rs 5 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased student.
A Community in Mourning
This incident has sent shockwaves through the community, particularly among those already traumatized by displacement. The death of a young child, who had sought safety in a relief camp only to meet such a fate, underscores a layer of vulnerability faced by internally displaced persons. The accident highlights urgent concerns regarding road safety near schools and in areas housing relief camps. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on supporting the injured student's recovery and providing justice for a life cut tragically short.
