While International Women's Day is a time to celebrate and empower women globally, a disturbing counter-trend has surfaced in Hyderabad's social landscape. Recent data from the State Women's Commission reveals that financially independent women are increasingly falling victim to exploitation by men, who manipulate relationships for monetary gain.
Alarming Statistics from Women's Commission Complaints
Over the past year, the commission received a total of 1,045 grievances, highlighting widespread issues affecting women in the region. Among these, domestic violence cases were particularly prevalent, with 553 incidents reported. Many of these involved abuse from family members, including husbands, underscoring ongoing challenges in household dynamics.
Additionally, around 345 cases were related to general harassment, such as cheating and financial deceit. This data points to a systemic problem where women's trust is being breached in various aspects of their lives.
Exploitation in Romantic and Friendly Relationships
Sources within the Women's Commission have detailed how men are taking advantage of employed or self-employed women. These women, often seeking emotional support, are approached by men who pretend to encourage their independence. Over time, these men borrow money or persuade women to invest funds with promises of high returns, only to disappear without repaying or providing explanations.
Women's activist A Suneetha has emphasized this troubling pattern, noting instances where women have spent large sums on gold jewellery and luxury vehicles for men they trusted. She explained that some men use charm and false promises to build genuine friendships, only to later marry partners chosen by their families, leaving the women financially and emotionally devastated.
Financial Exploitation Within Marriages
The issue extends beyond casual relationships into marriages, where women face significant financial risks. In some cases, married women have repaid housing loans, yet the properties were registered solely in their husbands' names. This has led to situations where husbands abandon their wives, leaving them in precarious financial positions without legal recourse to the assets they helped fund.

In response to these trends, Suneetha and other advocates are urging women to take proactive control of their finances. They stress that financial awareness and independence are crucial tools for protection against deceit and exploitation.
