Suspended Trinamool Congress legislator Humayun Kabir faced aggressive protests from individuals claiming to be TMC supporters during a site visit to Kolkata's iconic Brigade Parade Ground on Monday. The former MLA, who now leads the Janata Unnayan Party, was surveying the venue for a massive rally and Quran reading session planned for next month.
'Go Back, BJP Agent': The On-Ground Confrontation
The incident unfolded while Kabir was addressing the media after his inspection. A group of people, who were playing cricket on the vast ground, suddenly began shouting slogans against him. Brandishing their cricket bats and balls, the protesters chanted "Khela Hobe" (the game is on) and repeatedly yelled, "Go Back, BJP Agent." They accused the suspended leader of working as an agent for the Bharatiya Janata Party.
When questioned about their political affiliations, the individuals stated they had come from the Kolkata Port area specifically to play cricket but identified themselves as supporters of the ruling Trinamool Congress. They vowed to continue their slogan-shouting protests whenever Kabir visits the ground in the future.
Kabir's Defiant Stance and Upcoming Mega Rally
Responding to the allegations and the disruption, Humayun Kabir issued a defiant challenge before departing from the venue. "Let them try to disrupt the meeting if they can. We will see who whose agent is. I will not respond to their allegations," he stated. He expressed confidence about his upcoming event, claiming that close to 10 lakh (1 million) people would attend the rally scheduled for next month. Kabir assured that he would obtain all necessary permissions for the gathering at the historic ground.
The Political Backstory: A Mosque and a Rupture with TMC
The rift between Kabir and his former party, the TMC, became irreparable in December 2025. The party officially distanced itself from him after he laid the foundation stone for a "Babri Masjid-style" mosque in Beldanga, Murshidabad district, on December 6, 2025. Following this, he launched his own political outfit, the Janata Unnayan Party.
Kabir has consistently stated that his primary objective is to become the authentic leader of West Bengal's Muslim community and advocate for its development. He has accused the Trinamool Congress of exploiting the community solely for electoral votes. The suspended MLA has also declared his intention to oust the TMC from power and has extended an open invitation to other political parties to join his movement.
