Himanta Sarma Elected NDA Leader in Assam, Set to Return as CM
Himanta Sarma Elected NDA Leader in Assam

Himanta Biswa Sarma has been unanimously elected as the leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) legislative party in Assam, setting the stage for his return as the state's Chief Minister for a second consecutive term. The decision was taken during a meeting of the newly elected NDA MLAs in Guwahati on Wednesday, a day after the alliance secured a decisive victory in the assembly elections.

Sarma's Unopposed Election

Sarma's name was proposed by senior BJP leader and former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and seconded by other alliance partners, including the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL). No other candidate was put forward, leading to his unopposed election. The meeting was attended by all 78 NDA MLAs, including 60 from the BJP, 9 from the AGP, and 9 from the UPPL.

Governor's Invitation Expected

Following the election, Sarma is expected to meet Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi later today to stake his claim to form the government. The swearing-in ceremony is likely to take place on May 10, with a grand event planned at the Veterinary College playground in Guwahati. Sarma, who served as the Chief Minister from 2021, has been praised for his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and his efforts to boost infrastructure and healthcare in the state.

The NDA's victory in the 2026 Assam assembly elections was a landslide, winning 78 out of 126 seats, while the opposition Congress-led Mahajot alliance secured 48 seats. Sarma's leadership was a key factor in the alliance's success, as he campaigned extensively across the state, focusing on issues of development, national security, and cultural identity.

Reactions from Political Leaders

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Sarma on his election, stating, "Under your leadership, Assam has witnessed unprecedented growth and stability. I am confident that you will continue to work for the welfare of the people and strengthen the state's progress." Union Home Minister Amit Shah also praised Sarma, calling him a "dynamic leader" who has effectively implemented central schemes in Assam.

Opposition leaders, however, have questioned the NDA's mandate, alleging irregularities in the electoral process. Congress spokesperson said, "The people of Assam have given a fractured verdict, and we will challenge the results legally." Despite these claims, the Election Commission has certified the results, and Sarma's return to power seems imminent.

Sarma's Vision for Assam

In his acceptance speech, Sarma outlined his vision for the next five years, emphasizing on transforming Assam into a hub for education, healthcare, and industry. He promised to create 5 lakh new jobs, improve the state's infrastructure, and ensure the implementation of the Assam Accord. He also reiterated his commitment to the welfare of tea garden workers and indigenous communities.

Sarma's second term is expected to focus on completing pending projects, including the Brahmaputra riverfront development, the Guwahati metro, and the expansion of the state's healthcare network. He also aims to make Assam a leader in organic farming and renewable energy.

With the election of Himanta Biswa Sarma as the NDA leader, Assam is set to continue its journey under a leader who has been instrumental in shaping the state's political landscape. The swearing-in ceremony next week will mark the beginning of a new chapter for the state.
