NEW DELHI: In the 2026 Assam assembly elections, Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Himanta Biswa Sarma won the Jalukbari constituency with a commanding 1,27,151 votes. He defeated Congress rival Bidisha Neog by a substantial margin of 89,434 votes. The victory underscores the BJP's stronghold in the region and Sarma's enduring popularity among voters.

Himanta Biswa Sarma dominated the 2021 elections as well, securing 1,30,762 votes with a 73.52% vote share and a massive 92,677-vote margin over Indian National Congress candidate Romen Chandra Borthakur, who managed only 38,085 votes. Earlier, Sarma had switched from the Congress party, where he won convincingly in 2011.

Exit polls had predicted a decisive edge for the incumbent government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma, with most agencies forecasting a third consecutive term for the BJP in Assam.
