Haryana's Rajya Sabha Election: A Three-Way Battle for Two Seats on March 16
Chandigarh is set to witness a high-stakes political showdown as Haryana prepares for a three-way contest on March 16 to fill two Rajya Sabha seats. The election has gained significant attention with independent candidate Satish Nandal deciding to remain in the race, adding an unexpected twist to the proceedings.
Independent Candidate Enters the Fray with MLA Support
Satish Nandal, a former BJP candidate who once contested against Bhupinder Singh Hooda, has filed his nomination papers as an independent candidate. He has secured the backing of three independent MLAs: Rajesh Joon, Savitri Jindal, and Devender Kadian. This move introduces a new dynamic into the election, potentially splitting votes and influencing the outcome.
BJP and Congress Field Their Candidates
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), leveraging its solid majority of 48 MLAs in the Haryana Legislative Assembly, has fielded former Lok Sabha MP Sanjay Bhatia as its candidate. On the other hand, the opposition Congress party has backed Karamveer Baudh, a prominent Dalit face, in an effort to consolidate support and challenge the BJP's dominance.
Congress Faces a Test of Survival and Discipline
For the Congress and its leader of opposition, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, this election is a critical test of survival and party discipline. Despite holding 37 seats—technically enough to secure a win—the party is haunted by a decade of cross-voting and technical blunders that have cost them dearly in past Rajya Sabha elections.
In the infamous 2016 "ink gate" incident, 14 Congress votes were declared invalid due to the use of the wrong pen, inadvertently handing victory to BJP-backed Subhash Chandra. A similar setback occurred in 2022 when Ajay Maken lost by a single vote, attributed to one cross-vote and one invalid ballot. These past failures have put immense pressure on the party to ensure strict adherence to voting protocols this time around.
Hooda Confident of Victory Amid Preparations
Following a Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meeting on Monday, Bhupinder Singh Hooda expressed confidence in his party's prospects. He stated, "BJP has fielded two candidates, and we have one. Our candidate will have a clear win; all 37 MLAs will vote for him as first preference." To reinforce discipline, Hooda has summoned all Congress MLAs for a final training session over lunch on March 13, aiming to prevent any repeat of past mistakes.
BJP Deploys Strategic Think Tank
The BJP is leaving nothing to chance in this crucial election. The party has deployed a high-level think tank that includes Union ministers and the architects of the recent Rajya Sabha shake-up in Himachal Pradesh. Sources indicate that Harsh Sanghvi, deputy chief minister of Gujarat, has been appointed as an observer to oversee the execution of the party's strategy, ensuring a coordinated and effective campaign.
Vacant Seats and Political Implications
Two Rajya Sabha seats from Haryana are set to fall vacant as BJP members Kiran Choudhry and Ram Chander Jangra will complete their terms on April 9. The outcome of this election will not only determine the representation of Haryana in the Upper House but also serve as a barometer of the political climate in the state, with potential implications for future electoral battles.
As March 16 approaches, all eyes are on Haryana, where political maneuvering, party discipline, and strategic planning will play pivotal roles in deciding the fate of the candidates and the balance of power in the Rajya Sabha.
