Haryana Chief Minister Reassures Public on Fuel and Gas Supply Amid Global Unrest
In a press conference held in Chandigarh on Saturday, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini addressed growing concerns over potential shortages of essential fuels, firmly stating that there is no scarcity of petrol, diesel, or cooking gas in the state. This assurance comes amidst heightened tensions in Central Asia, which have sparked fears of supply disruptions globally. Saini urged citizens to remain calm and avoid panic-buying, emphasizing that the situation is under control.
Detailed Review of Petroleum Stocks and Operations
Saini revealed that he has personally conducted a thorough review with petroleum companies to assess the supply chain. According to his findings, the availability of petrol, diesel, and gas has remained consistent over the past four months, with ample stocks in place to meet demand. The state boasts 4,032 government-run petrol pumps, which collectively handle an average daily sale of 4,804 kilolitres of petrol and 12,003 kilolitres of diesel. To ensure seamless distribution, oil marketing companies have enhanced their terminal operations, accelerated dispatches, deployed additional field officers, and prioritized morning supplies to maintain normalcy.
Robust Cooking Gas Supply and Distribution
Regarding cooking gas, Saini described the situation as fully satisfactory. Haryana receives approximately 2 lakh LPG cylinders daily and distributes around 1.9 lakh cylinders, ensuring a steady flow to consumers. Adequate reserves are maintained at bottling plants, with refill norms strictly adhered to: 25 days for urban areas and 45 days for rural regions. Special attention is being given to critical institutions such as hospitals and schools, with ongoing supply of commercial LPG. Currently, the state holds a stock of 1.73 lakh commercial cylinders, supported by a central government framework that allocates 70% of commercial LPG resources. Saini expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for initiatives that have boosted domestic LPG production from 40%, reducing reliance on imports.
Strict Measures Against Black Marketing and Misinformation
The Chief Minister issued a stern warning against black marketing and hoarding, announcing that strict action is being taken to curb such activities. As of March 24, enforcement efforts have led to the seizure of 928 LPG cylinders and four vehicles, identification of 66 accused individuals, and registration of eight FIRs. Police patrolling has been intensified in sensitive areas to prevent rumour-mongering and ensure public order. Saini emphasized that spreading misinformation will not be tolerated, and legal consequences will follow for those involved in illicit practices.
Infrastructure Enhancements for PNG Expansion
To further secure energy supplies, Haryana has implemented policy changes to promote the expansion of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) networks. The lease rent for laying PNG pipelines has been significantly reduced from Rs 3 lakh per km for a 10-year advance payment to a one-time charge of Rs 1,000 per km, benefiting both companies and consumers. Currently, the state has 28,377 km of PNG pipeline infrastructure. With a target of 13,33,603 PNG connections, progress includes 5,59,761 installations and 3,32,162 operational connections. Efforts are underway to activate the remaining links, and the government has introduced deemed permission to expedite this expansion. Domestic connections are projected to double within the next three months, enhancing energy accessibility across Haryana.
