Haryana Assembly Chaos: 9 Congress MLAs Suspended Over Vande Mataram Row
Haryana: 9 Congress MLAs suspended in Vande Mataram row

A major uproar in the Haryana Legislative Assembly on Friday led to the dramatic suspension and forcible removal of nine Congress legislators. The chaos erupted during a discussion commemorating 150 years of the national song, Vande Mataram, with the opposition protesting against remarks made by state ministers.

Protest and Suspension Over Historical Remarks

The incident unfolded on December 19, 2025, when Congress MLAs first objected to comments by Transport Minister Anil Vij. The protest intensified after Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini accused former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and the Congress party of fragmenting the national song to appease the Muslim League historically.

This allegation provoked Congress members, who rushed to the Well of the House, raising slogans. Despite repeated warnings from Assembly Speaker Harvinder Singh Kalyan, the legislators continued their demonstration. The Speaker then named the nine MLAs and ordered their suspension from the proceedings.

Physical Removal and Heated Exchanges

As marshals moved to enforce the order, four of the suspended MLAs physically resisted and had to be dragged out of the assembly hall. The scene turned chaotic as the legislators shouted slogans, including "Inquilab Zindabad," even while the Chief Minister was speaking.

Speaker Kalyan was firm, instructing the marshals, "Not a single one of those nine persons who have been named should remain inside the House. It's your responsibility. Take them out." He expressed his displeasure, stating that coming to the Well had become an unacceptable "fashion."

Intervention and Revocation of Suspension

Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda strongly objected to the remarks about Nehru and the handling of the protest. He argued, "There should be no insult to the national song," and later warned, "Call them back to the House and do not force us to leave."

Following a heated debate, where Education Minister Mahipal Danda defended the CM's statements as "historical facts," Chief Minister Saini himself intervened. He asserted that his speech contained no unparliamentary language and then requested the Speaker to recall the suspended MLAs.

The tension de-escalated after both Saini and Hooda raised slogans of "Vande Mataram" together in the House. Subsequently, the Speaker agreed to revoke the suspension, allowing the nine Congress legislators to return to the assembly.

The winter session, which began on the same day, witnessed this sharp political clash, highlighting the deep-seated historical and political divisions surrounding national symbols in Indian politics.
