Gujarat Government Extends Canal Irrigation Water Supply to Support Farmers

In a significant move to aid the agricultural community, the Gujarat government has announced an extension of canal water supply for irrigation purposes. The decision, revealed by Minister of State for Water Resources Ishwarsinh Patel in the state assembly on Friday, ensures that water from canals under the Water Resources Department will remain available to farmers until April 30.

Addressing Crop Challenges Due to Monsoon Delays

Minister Patel elaborated on the rationale behind this extension, citing the unusual weather patterns that have impacted the farming cycle. "The 2025 monsoon concluded later than expected, and subsequent unseasonal rainfall led to widespread failure of the kharif crop," he stated. This disruption has created a ripple effect, delaying the sowing for the rabi season, which in turn is likely to postpone the harvest of rabi crops this year.

Typically, irrigation water from these canals is provided only until the end of February for the rabi season. However, the extended monsoon and its consequences necessitated a review of this schedule to support farmers during this critical period.

Government Response to Farmer Representations

The decision to extend the water supply came after thorough discussions at the state government level. "Representations from farmers requesting an extension of irrigation water were carefully considered," Patel explained. Following these deliberations, the government opted to provide continued access to canal water, aiming to mitigate the challenges posed by the delayed agricultural timeline.

This proactive measure underscores the government's commitment to addressing the immediate needs of the farming community, ensuring they have the necessary resources to manage their crops effectively despite the adverse weather conditions.

By extending the irrigation deadline, the Gujarat government aims to provide stability and support to farmers as they navigate the complexities of this year's altered growing season.
