Gujarat Assembly Discloses Financial and Administrative Updates for 2024-2025

In a series of written replies presented in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, the state government unveiled significant data covering grants, tax revenues, urban development, and public service vacancies for the years 2024 and 2025. These disclosures came in response to queries from various MLAs, highlighting key aspects of governance and fiscal management.

Substantial Grants Received Under National River Conservation Programme

The government reported that Gujarat received a total grant of Rs 146.27 crore under the National River Conservation Programme (NRCP) over the past two years. Specifically, Rs 104.7 crore was allocated in 2024, followed by Rs 41.57 crore in 2025. In response to a question from MLA Shailesh Parmar, it was further detailed that expenditures from these grants amounted to Rs 101.16 crore in 2024 and Rs 39.16 crore in 2025, demonstrating active utilization of funds for river conservation initiatives.

Urban Authorities Allocated Plots for Commercial Sale

Addressing a query by AAP MLA Gopal Italia, the government informed the assembly that urban authorities in Ahmedabad received 190 plots under the Town Planning (TP) Act designated for sale for commercial purposes in the two-year period ending January 1, 2026. Similarly, in Rajkot, urban authorities were allocated 29 such plots, indicating a push towards urban commercial development across major cities.

Significant Tax Arrears from Industrial Units

As of January 31, 2026, the state has identified 520 industrial units that owe sales tax exceeding Rs one crore each to the government. In reply to another question, authorities confirmed that recovery actions have been initiated, including measures such as confiscating assets, auctioning properties, and other legal steps to reclaim pending tax dues, underscoring efforts to enhance revenue collection.

Vacancies in Gujarat Education Service

According to information provided in response to a question by MLA Jignesh Mevani, there are currently 54 vacant Class 1 posts in the Gujarat Education Service. Out of a total sanctioned strength of 146 Class 1 positions, 92 are filled, while for Class 2 posts, 948 out of 1,807 sanctioned roles are occupied, leaving 859 vacancies. This data points to ongoing recruitment challenges in the education sector.

Approvals for Grant-in-Aid Colleges

In a reply to Patan MLA Kirit Patel, the government stated that 37 colleges have been granted in-principle approval over the past two years under the grant-in-aid scheme. Additionally, applications for 309 more colleges are currently under consideration, reflecting efforts to expand higher education infrastructure across the state.

Substantial Revenue from Petroleum Taxes

The government earned a total of Rs 41,593 crore from taxes on petroleum products, including petrol, diesel, PNG, and CNG, over the last two years. This information was provided in a written reply to MLA Amit Chavda, highlighting the significant contribution of fuel taxes to the state's exchequer and fiscal health.
