In a decisive move against environmental and legal violations, the Garhwa sub-divisional officer (SDO) has initiated a stringent crackdown targeting rampant illegal sand mining and transportation activities in the district. The action follows a surprise inspection conducted over the weekend, which uncovered significant illicit operations.
Surprise Inspection Uncovers Racket
The illegal mining and transportation of sand came to light on Saturday during an unannounced visit by SDO Sanjay Kumar. He inspected various sand ghats situated along the banks of the Koel and Banki rivers in the Majhiaon block of Garhwa district. The visit was prompted by numerous complaints from locals about the unchecked activities disrupting the area.
"The matter was brought to our attention through public grievances," stated SDO Kumar, detailing the operation's origins. The inspection confirmed the widespread nature of the illegal sand mining racket, leading to immediate administrative action.
Notices Served, Stern Warnings Issued
Following the on-ground assessment, the district administration swung into action. Notices were served to over two dozen individuals allegedly involved in the unauthorized extraction and movement of sand. The SDO emphasized that the nuisance caused by these operations would no longer be tolerated.
"The sound pollution created by the sand-laden tractors can’t be tolerated at the cost of spoiling public peace," Kumar asserted. He issued a stern warning, stating, "Strict action will be taken against the breachers of the peace, and they may be caged in prison if needed."
No Leniency for Complicit Officials
In a significant remark, SDO Sanjay Kumar also indicated that the probe would look inward. He warned that any government staff found colluding with or facilitating the illegal mining racket would face severe consequences. "If any connivance by govt staff is found in this racket, they, too, will have to face disciplinary action," he declared, ensuring the crackdown would be comprehensive and leave no room for corruption.
This crackdown in Garhwa highlights the ongoing battle against illegal mining, which strips riverbeds, damages ecosystems, and causes significant revenue loss to the state. The administration's proactive stance signals a commitment to enforcing environmental laws and maintaining public order.
