Tragic Car Accident Claims Four Lives in Villupuram District

In a devastating incident early Tuesday morning, four individuals from Chennai lost their lives after their vehicle plunged into a deep roadside farm well near Gingee in Villupuram district. The victims, identified as S Vinoth, 38, a lawyer at the Madras High Court; K Sekar, 27, a kabaddi player; A Jayamurugan, 42, a real estate businessman; and M Raja, 45, a private company driver, were returning to Chennai following a religious pilgrimage to the Tiruvannamalai temple.

Details of the Fatal Accident

The accident occurred as the car approached Alampoondi. According to preliminary reports, Raja, who was driving, lost control of the vehicle due to drowsiness. This caused the car to veer off the road and fall into a well filled with water, which was approximately 50 feet deep. The sudden plunge left the vehicle submerged, trapping all occupants inside.

Challenging Rescue Operation

Upon receiving the alert, a police team from Sathyamanagalam and fire and rescue services personnel from Gingee rushed to the scene. However, rescue efforts were significantly hampered by the depth of the well and the submerged condition of the car. Divers faced initial difficulties in reaching the victims, who were trapped within the mangled wreckage.

After a grueling two-and-a-half-hour operation, which involved the use of a heavy-duty crane, the car was successfully pulled to the surface. Rescuers discovered the bodies of Vinoth, Sekar, and Raja inside the vehicle. Jayamurugan’s body was later recovered from the well following an intensive search conducted by the rescue teams.

Aftermath and Investigation

All four bodies have been sent for postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. Authorities are investigating the incident further to ascertain if any other factors contributed to the accident. The local community has expressed shock and grief over the tragic loss, highlighting the dangers of drowsy driving on rural roads.

This incident underscores the critical importance of road safety, especially during long journeys after religious or personal events. It serves as a somber reminder for drivers to ensure they are well-rested and alert while behind the wheel to prevent such heartbreaking accidents.
