A devastating accident in Kushinagar district on Thursday resulted in the deaths of four individuals and left 17 others injured. The incident occurred when a tractor-trolley carrying devotees to a Ram Navami 'nahan mela' (holy dip fair) overturned into the Gandak canal. The victims were predominantly women traveling from Maharajganj district to participate in the Chaitra Ram Navami rituals at Bhainsaha Ghat on the Narayani river.

The accident took place near the Sisva Gopal regulator within the jurisdiction of Khadda police station. Preliminary reports indicate that the hook connecting the tractor to the trolley snapped unexpectedly, causing the vehicle to lose control and plunge approximately 20 feet down into the canal. Eyewitness accounts describe a scene of panic and chaos as locals rushed to assist trapped passengers.
The tractor-trolley was reportedly overcrowded, carrying around 50 devotees including 25-30 women, 10 children, and approximately 10 men. Some male passengers seated at the rear managed to jump to safety, but most occupants were trapped beneath the overturned vehicle. Rescue efforts were complicated by the precarious position of the trolley in the canal.
Rescue Operations and Medical Response
Local residents initiated immediate rescue efforts, using additional tractors to pull the submerged trolley from the canal waters. Emergency response teams including Dial 108 ambulances were dispatched to the scene, with police personnel providing crucial assistance in evacuation operations.

The deceased have been identified as Meera Devi (50), Sarita Devi (65), Vimla Devi (50), and Nirmala Devi (55). All victims were residents of Badhara Farm village under Ghughli police station in Maharajganj district.
Khadda MLA Vivekanand Pandey visited the hospital where injured victims were being treated and assured comprehensive medical care for all affected individuals. "Those seriously hurt have been referred to higher medical centers. All victims are being provided the best possible care," stated Pandey during his hospital visit.
Additional Chief Medical Officer Ramdas Kushwaha confirmed that medical teams were mobilized immediately upon receiving information from CHC in-charge Dr. PN Gupta. "Twelve patients were referred to the district hospital, with two in critical condition," Kushwaha added.

Survivors provided harrowing accounts of the moments leading up to the accident. Aarti, one of the injured devotees, recalled, "We were all seated in the trolley when the driver was asking for directions. As the tractor turned, the accident happened."
Another injured passenger, Manoj Singh, described the sudden mechanical failure: "The hook broke suddenly, dragging both the tractor and trolley nearly 20 feet down into the canal."
Khadda Station House Officer Sandeep Singh confirmed that most victims originated from Maharajganj district and were en route to the Ram Navami fair when the tragedy occurred. The incident has raised questions about safety protocols for transporting large groups in rural areas, particularly during religious festivals when vehicles are often overloaded.
