Major Fire Ravages Tribal Village in Khandwa District, Destroying Homes and Livestock
A devastating fire broke out at a tribal village in Khandwa district on Wednesday afternoon, resulting in significant destruction of property and livestock. The incident occurred at Jamli Khurd Khapri village under Shekhpura gram panchayat in Pandhana tehsil, completely reducing six houses to ashes and killing approximately 20 goats.
Timeline and Immediate Response
The fire reportedly started around 1 pm and spread rapidly through the cluster of houses. According to SP Manoj Rai, the houses belonged to members of a family living in Dhanter Mama's Faliya. The family members had gone out for wheat harvesting work when the incident took place, leaving their homes vulnerable to the blaze.
After receiving information about the fire, the fire brigade reached the spot and managed to control the flames. Local villagers also stepped in to prevent the fire from spreading further, demonstrating remarkable community cooperation. They used tractors to cultivate nearby fields, creating a barrier that prevented the flames from reaching the standing wheat crop.
Extent of Damage and Losses
According to preliminary estimates, six houses were completely destroyed in the incident. The charred remains of approximately 20 goats were found scattered at the site, with the animals having been burnt alive in the fire. Household belongings were completely destroyed in the blaze, adding to the devastation faced by the affected families.
The affected families reported significant financial losses beyond the structural damage. They claimed that cash and valuables kept inside the houses were lost in the fire. According to their statements, about Rs 5 lakh in cash was kept in the houses, including Rs 2 lakh that one of the family members had set aside specifically to pay a tractor instalment.
Members of the tribal families also reported losing silver jewellery weighing around 5 kg that was kept in the houses. This represents not just financial value but cultural and sentimental significance for the affected community.

Police officials stated that the exact cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed, though preliminary investigations suggest a short circuit may have been responsible. A damage assessment is currently underway, and authorities have prepared a panchnama (official report) documenting the incident.
Rawat, an official involved in the assessment process, confirmed that the damage report will be submitted to the tehsildar after completion of the formal assessment. This documentation will be crucial for determining appropriate compensation and support for the affected families.
