Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said that while it is essential for people residing in the state to learn Marathi, any form of violence in this regard is completely unacceptable. He made the remarks while speaking to reporters after paying floral tribute at the Hutatma Chowk on the occasion of Maharashtra Day. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawade was also present during the occasion.
CM's Stance on Language and Violence
Fadnavis reiterated the state government's commitment to promoting Marathi as a language of communication and cultural identity. He urged all residents, including migrants, to embrace the local language to foster harmony and integration. However, he strongly condemned any coercive or violent methods to enforce language learning, stating that such actions go against the democratic ethos of the state.
Maharashtra Day Celebrations
The Chief Minister participated in the state's foundation day celebrations, paying homage to the martyrs at Hutatma Chowk. He highlighted the significance of the day in remembering the sacrifices made for the creation of a separate Marathi-speaking state. Fadnavis also called for unity and cooperation among all communities to ensure the continued progress of Maharashtra.
Mayor Ritu Tawade echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the need for peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among different linguistic groups. She assured that the municipal corporation would take steps to promote Marathi while ensuring the safety and rights of all citizens.
The comments come amid ongoing debates about language imposition in the state, with some groups advocating for mandatory Marathi usage in government offices and schools. The CM's balanced approach aims to address concerns without alienating non-Marathi speakers.
