The state of Arunachal Pradesh is in mourning following the demise of former legislator and noted social figure Yadap Apang. The wife of former Chief Minister Gegong Apang, she passed away at her residence in Oyan, located in the East Siang district, on Friday.
A Life of Public Service and Political Legacy
Born in 1954, Yadap Apang carved her own niche in the political landscape of the frontier state. She was elected as a member of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, representing the Pasighat West constituency from 1995 to 1999. Her election marked a significant achievement, as she remains one of the few women leaders to have been elected to the state assembly in its history.
Beyond her legislative role, she was a steadfast partner to her husband, former Chief Minister Gegong Apang, and was widely respected for her grace and commitment to the people.
Pioneering Contributions Beyond Politics
Yadap Apang's legacy extends far beyond the assembly halls. She was a visionary entrepreneur and a pioneer in Arunachal Pradesh's tea sector. In the mid-1980s, she established the renowned Donyi Polo Tea Estate. The estate gained fame for its commitment to sustainable agricultural practices and for producing high-quality specialty teas.
Its product portfolio, which includes unique varieties like Golden Needles and purple tea, has received acclaim. The estate's Siang tea continues to be a best-selling product, putting Arunachal Pradesh on the map of India's premium tea-producing regions.
Adding to her multifaceted profile, Yadap Apang also served as the publisher of The Arunachal Times, the leading daily newspaper of the state, influencing the media landscape for years.
Condolences and Surviving Family
The news of her passing has drawn heartfelt condolences from across the state. Governor KT Parnaik and Chief Minister Pema Khandu led the tributes, expressing profound grief.
Governor Parnaik stated that with her demise, the state has lost an eminent social worker and a devoted public representative. Chief Minister Khandu, in a social media post, expressed deep sadness, remembering her as a committed public representative and a gracious personality who served the people with dedication and dignity.
Yadap Apang is survived by her husband, former CM Gegong Apang, their six children, including former Union minister Omak Apang, and several grandchildren. Her passing marks the end of an era for a family deeply intertwined with the development and politics of Arunachal Pradesh.
