Former Andhra Minister Ambati Rambabu Sent to 14-Day Judicial Custody Over Controversial Remarks
In a significant political development that has sent ripples across Andhra Pradesh, the Special Mobile Court in Guntur on Sunday ordered the judicial remand of former minister and prominent YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) leader Ambati Rambabu for fourteen days. This decision comes in connection with a case where Rambabu is accused of making inappropriate and vulgar comments against Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, which police allege escalated into serious law and order tensions in the state.
Court Proceedings and Emotional Pleas
The court's ruling followed a prolonged and intense hearing where both the prosecution and defense presented sharp arguments. During the proceedings, Ambati Rambabu made emotional submissions before the judge, alleging that he faced physical harassment by police after his arrest. He detailed that around 2:30 am, he was taken out of his cell and subjected to mistreatment by Nallapadu circle inspector Vamsi and two other CIs.
Rambabu claimed he was forced to stand in an embarrassing posture, resulting in severe leg pain, and asserted that the officers admitted acting under "pressure from above". He further stated that he was denied the opportunity to meet anyone at the police station, raising concerns about his treatment in custody.
Police Opposition and Legal Arguments
The judge meticulously recorded all grievances raised by the former minister. However, the police strongly opposed his plea, submitting a remand report that highlighted Rambabu's alleged criminal history. According to police, Ambati Rambabu has sixteen criminal cases registered across Andhra Pradesh and a pattern of making repeated controversial remarks aimed at provoking tensions.
The Nallapadu police informed the court that Rambabu used extremely vulgar language to insult Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, attempted to fuel discord between communities, and posed a serious threat to public peace. They warned that releasing him could trigger widespread unrest across the state and even endanger his own safety, leading them to request both remand and custody.
Court's Decision and Aftermath
After carefully considering arguments from both sides, the court ordered 14 days of judicial remand in the case related to the objectionable comments. Notably, the court granted station bail in a separate case registered against Rambabu. Police are now making arrangements to shift Ambati Rambabu to the Rajahmundry Central Jail, marking a pivotal moment in this high-profile legal and political saga.
This incident underscores the heightened political tensions in Andhra Pradesh, with implications for law enforcement and judicial processes in the region. The case continues to draw attention as it unfolds, reflecting broader dynamics in state politics.
