The political and social landscape of Odisha mourned the loss of a prominent leader as former BJP legislator Sanchita Mohanty passed away on Friday. She was 67 years old. Mohanty breathed her last at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar after a prolonged illness spanning over a year.

A Life Dedicated to Public Service and Advocacy

Born on September 17, 1958, Sanchita Mohanty was a highly educated leader. She held a post-graduate degree in political science and another in Odissi dance, later pursuing law at the prestigious Utkal University. Her academic pursuits were a precursor to a life committed to public cause.

Mohanty's political career peaked in 2004 when she was elected as the MLA from the Korei assembly constituency. In a significant electoral victory, she defeated veteran Janata Dal leader Ashok Das. She served the constituency from 2004 to 2009, during which she was known for initiating several development projects.

Beyond electoral politics, she was a formidable social force. For more than three decades, Mohanty established herself as a noted women's leader in Jajpur district. She tirelessly championed the rights of women, Dalits, and the farming community, carving a distinct niche for herself in the state's women's movement.

Leaders Pay Tribute to a "Rare Champion"

The news of her demise drew immediate condolences from across the political spectrum. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Assembly Speaker Surama Padhy, Jajpur MP Rabindra Narayan Behera, and Law and Works Minister Prithviraj Harichandan were among the several leaders who visited her Bhubaneswar residence to pay their last respects.

Expressing deep sorrow, Kalpana Mallick, a member of the State Women's Commission, stated, "Her death comes as a shock. Women have lost a rare champion of their causes."

BJP leader and the current MLA of Korei, Akash Das Nayak, offered a heartfelt tribute. He highlighted her deep understanding of issues affecting women and her indelible mark as a leader. "She was simple, honest and calm," Nayak said, recalling her dedicated work and the development initiatives she undertook in Korei during her tenure.

Legacy of a Grassroots Leader

Sanchita Mohanty's passing marks the end of an era for grassroots activism and political representation in the region. Her journey from an educated individual to a lawmaker and a steadfast advocate for marginalized communities underscores a life lived with purpose.

Her contributions, particularly in amplifying the voices of women and farmers in Jajpur, have left a lasting legacy. As the state bids farewell to one of its dedicated daughters, her work continues to inspire those committed to social justice and equitable development in Odisha.
