Odisha's Ekamra Heritage Project Targets March 2027 Completion
In a significant announcement, Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan confirmed on Sunday that the ambitious Ekamra Kshetra Amenities and Monuments Revival Action (Ekamra) project is scheduled for completion by March 2027. The minister made this statement during the Mahashivratri celebrations at the historic Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar, highlighting the state government's commitment to preserving and enhancing the city's cultural heritage.
New Agency Takes Over Project Execution
Harichandan revealed that a new agency has been appointed to execute the Ekamra project after the previous contractor expressed unwillingness to continue. This change aims to ensure smoother progress and adherence to the revised timeline. The minister emphasized that the transition is part of strategic adjustments to overcome earlier hurdles and accelerate implementation.
Key Components of the Ekamra Project
The project encompasses several transformative elements designed to revitalize Bhubaneswar's spiritual and historical landscape:
- Bindu Sagar Redevelopment: The ancient Bindu Sagar lake will be redeveloped as a heritage lake, restoring its cultural significance and aesthetic appeal.
- Interpretation Centre: A new interpretation centre will be established to educate visitors about the region's rich history and religious importance.
- Grand Shiva Statue: A majestic statue of Lord Shiva will be erected, serving as a focal point for devotion and tourism.
Revised Plan and Enhanced Budget
To facilitate timely completion, a revised project plan is currently under preparation, accompanied by an enhanced budgetary allocation. Harichandan noted that these measures are crucial to addressing logistical challenges and ensuring high-quality outcomes. The minister's announcement comes after a previous statement in 2025, where he indicated that some project components would be finished before this year's Mahashivratri, underscoring the ongoing efforts to meet deadlines.
The Ekamra project represents a major initiative by the Odisha government to boost heritage tourism and urban renewal in Bhubaneswar. With the new agency in place and updated resources, authorities are optimistic about delivering a world-class heritage precinct by 2027, benefiting both locals and pilgrims.
