DYFI Leaders in Kozhikode Revolt Against CPM's Candidate Choice for Manjeshwar
In a significant internal rift, several office-bearers of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) have publicly opposed the Communist Party of India (Marxist)'s decision to field district secretariat member K R Jayananda as the candidate for the Manjeshwar constituency in the upcoming assembly elections. The dissenting leaders have issued a stark warning, stating they may refuse to cooperate in the campaign if his candidature is not reconsidered.
Grassroots Opposition and Threats of Non-Cooperation
Shabeer, the DYFI Uppala block treasurer, voiced the discontent clearly, asserting, "K R Jayananda does not cooperate with grassroots-level committees and we are prepared to support any other candidate." He emphasized that if the party leadership does not change the candidate, DYFI activists might deliberately stay away from poll campaign activities, potentially crippling the Left's efforts in the constituency.
When questioned about the possibility of facing disciplinary action for their defiant stance, Shabeer remained resolute, declaring they are ready to confront any consequences. He argued that fielding Jayananda would inadvertently benefit the United Democratic Front (UDF), and instead, the party should nominate a candidate capable of mounting a strong challenge rather than one perceived to have little chance of victory.
Formal Complaints and Historical Context
Office-bearers from the DYFI's Bandiyode and Uppala regional committees have formally submitted complaints to the district committee, objecting to Jayananda's nomination. This follows earlier similar protests from DYFI leaders in Kumbala, who sent a letter to the district leadership expressing their concerns.
Previously, the district committee had explored various options, including the possibility of fielding Shanavas Padhoor as a Left-backed independent candidate in Manjeshwar. However, the state secretariat intervened, advising the district leadership to exercise extreme caution in candidate selection. They warned that a misstep could inadvertently aid BJP's K Surendran in securing the seat.
In the 2021 assembly elections, IUML's AKM Ashraf narrowly defeated Surendran by a margin of just 745 votes, while CPM's V V Rameshan garnered 23.6% of the votes. This tight electoral history underscores the high stakes involved in the candidate decision, with the CPM aiming to avoid splitting the anti-BJP vote and prevent Surendran from capitalizing on any internal discord.
Implications for the Upcoming Election
The internal rebellion within DYFI highlights growing tensions within the Left front in Kerala, particularly in key constituencies like Manjeshwar. The threat of non-cooperation from youth activists could significantly impact the CPM's campaign effectiveness, potentially altering the electoral dynamics in a closely contested seat.
As the assembly elections approach, the CPM leadership faces a critical decision: whether to heed the demands of its youth wing and reconsider Jayananda's candidature or risk alienating a crucial segment of its support base. The outcome of this internal dispute may have far-reaching consequences for the party's performance in Manjeshwar and beyond.
