Madurai: DMK councillors have demanded that Minister C T R Nirmal Kumar provide proof for his allegations of ₹2,000 crore corruption in the Madurai corporation, failing which they would besiege his house. The demand came during the corporation council meeting on Tuesday.
Councillor Condemns Minister's Statement
DMK councillor M Jeyaram condemned the minister's statement, claiming that many council members were involved in irregularities. Speaking to reporters, Jeyaram said the minister accused all council members of embezzling between ₹20 crore and ₹50 crore each. He insisted that the minister must attend the next council meeting and provide evidence for his claims.
“The DMK welcomes punishment for anyone who has done wrong. However, portraying all council members as criminals without evidence is unacceptable,” Jeyaram stated.
Allegations of Larger Irregularities
Madurai East constituency MLA Karthikeyan further alleged that much larger irregularities occurred in the urban planning department of the corporation over the past five years. He pointed out that approval was granted for a supermarket building project in Vilangudi within 45 minutes of transfer from the DTCP portal to the corporation portal, while other applications remained pending for several months.
Rejecting Jeyaram’s claim that no irregularities occurred in the Madurai corporation, Karthikeyan questioned why the former mayor, zonal leaders, and many officials were removed from their positions if there was no wrongdoing.
