Dharwad Muslim Society Urges Congress for Muslim Candidate in Davangere South Bypoll
The Anjuman-e-Islam Society of Dharwad and Hubballi has made a significant appeal to the Congress party leadership, including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, urging them to field a Muslim candidate in the upcoming Davangere South Assembly byelection. The society has highlighted the critical need for social justice and equitable political representation in the region.
Community Leaders Advocate for Fair Representation
Addressing the media after a crucial meeting with community leaders, society president Ismail Tamatgar and former minister AM Hindasgeri emphasized that the Congress party should seriously consider allotting the ticket to a Muslim candidate. This byelection was necessitated by the unfortunate demise of senior Congress leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa, who had long represented the constituency.
The leaders pointed out that Muslims constitute a significant share of the electorate in Davangere South and have consistently supported Shivashankarappa in previous elections out of consensus and deep respect. "During the last assembly election, Shivashankarappa had indicated that it would be his final contest and had sought the community's support. Respecting his appeal, the community stood firmly with him," Tamatgar stated.
Call for Justice and Broader Political Influence
"With the situation now changed, the Congress must ensure fair representation and do justice to the Muslim community," he added, underscoring the shifting political landscape. The leaders noted that the constituency has remained under the influence of the Shamanur family for over five decades, and this byelection presents a unique opportunity to broaden political representation and inclusivity.
They highlighted that SS Mallikarjun, son of the late leader, currently serves as a minister, while his wife Prabha Mallikarjun is an MP, suggesting that the family's political dominance should be balanced with greater diversity.
Reference to Shiggaon Bypoll Success
Drawing parallels to the recent Shiggaon bypoll, the leaders recalled that initial hesitation over fielding a Muslim candidate was overcome after concerted efforts by senior Congress leaders such as Zameer Ahmed Khan and Satish Jarkiholi. "The party eventually fielded Yasir Ahmed Khan Pathan, who secured a comfortable victory," they noted, indicating a precedent for successful Muslim candidacy in similar contexts.
Support from Congress Insiders
Congress leader Deepak Chinchore weighed in on the discussion, describing Zameer Ahmed Khan as an experienced and secular leader. He cautioned party members against making disparaging remarks about Khan and expressed confidence that the party could secure a victory in Davangere South if it fields a Muslim candidate. This internal support adds weight to the society's appeal, suggesting a growing consensus within the party for more inclusive candidate selection.
The call from the Anjuman-e-Islam Society reflects broader demands for political equity and representation in Karnataka's electoral dynamics, setting the stage for a potentially transformative byelection in Davangere South.
