HD Kumaraswamy, the former Chief Minister of Karnataka, has clarified that his father and former Prime Minister Deve Gowda did not apply for a Rajya Sabha berth. Speaking to the media, Kumaraswamy also launched a sharp attack on the Congress party over the ongoing MLC election process.
No application from Deve Gowda
Addressing speculation about Deve Gowda's potential entry into the Rajya Sabha, Kumaraswamy stated unequivocally that no application was submitted by the Janata Dal (Secular) patriarch. He dismissed rumors as baseless and accused political rivals of spreading misinformation to create confusion within the party ranks.
Congress under fire
Kumaraswamy did not hold back his criticism of the Congress party, particularly regarding the MLC elections. He remarked, "We need two votes and Congress too needs two votes. But their approach has been inconsistent and opportunistic." He further alleged that the Congress was trying to destabilize the JD(S) by poaching its legislators.
Political reactions
The statement has sparked a fresh wave of political debate in Karnataka. While the Congress has denied any wrongdoing, JD(S) leaders have rallied behind Kumaraswamy's comments. Political analysts suggest that the JD(S) is keen on consolidating its base ahead of future elections.
Deve Gowda, now 93, has largely stayed away from active politics in recent years, but his influence remains significant in the JD(S). The party is currently navigating a complex political landscape, balancing alliances and oppositions.
In related developments, the MLC election has seen intense lobbying among all major parties, with each side accusing the other of unethical practices. The final results are expected later this week.
