Delhi Chief Minister Unveils Major Financial Assistance Package for MCD
In a significant move aimed at bolstering urban infrastructure, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday announced a special financial assistance package worth several thousand crore rupees for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The official statement highlighted that this substantial allocation is designed to strengthen roads, sanitation services, schools, and various civic facilities throughout the national capital.
Comprehensive Road Development and Sanitation Initiatives
According to the detailed official release, sanitation services and the maintenance of roads below 60 feet fall squarely under the jurisdiction of the MCD. To address these critical areas, proposals worth approximately Rs 1,330 crore have been meticulously prepared for the fiscal year 2026-27. This funding is earmarked specifically for the paving, repair, and strengthening of nearly 1,000 kilometres of roads across Delhi. The statement further emphasized that all major construction and repair works should be completed by September 30. This strategic timeline is intended to effectively curb dust pollution, which typically peaks during the months of October and November, thereby improving air quality and public health.
Modernizing Sanitation with a Sustainable Approach
In a bid to modernize sanitation infrastructure and provide a sustainable, long-term solution for pollution control, the government has approved a groundbreaking Rs 2,300 crore project. This initiative will operate on a 10-year OPEX (Operational Expenditure) model, ensuring consistent funding and maintenance. The comprehensive project includes the deployment of 70 additional mechanical road-sweeping machines and 1,000 electric litter pickers. These advanced tools are expected to significantly enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of street cleaning operations, contributing to a cleaner urban environment.
Enhancing Educational and Community Facilities
The financial assistance package also prioritizes social infrastructure, with an additional Rs 50 crore allocated specifically for the upgradation of MCD primary schools. This investment aims to improve educational facilities and learning environments for young students. Furthermore, another Rs 50 crore has been earmarked for the repair and renovation of 298 community buildings. These structures are largely utilized by economically weaker sections of society, and their refurbishment is crucial for providing safe and functional spaces for community activities and support services.
Commitment to Decentralized Governance and Citizen Welfare
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta underscored the government's dedication to empowering local bodies as a top priority for holistic development. "Empowering local bodies is the government's priority for development," Gupta stated. She elaborated that this substantial fiscal support reflects a deep-seated commitment to decentralized governance and aims to foster long-term improvements in the quality of life for all citizens. The allocations have also been strategically made under the Chief Minister's Development Fund, ensuring targeted and effective utilization of resources to address pressing urban challenges and enhance overall civic amenities in Delhi.
