The Karnataka government has laid out a comprehensive plan to establish Bengaluru as a premier economic hub, following a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh. The meeting, held on Wednesday, examined a draft plan prepared by the Institute for Sustainability, Employment and Growth (ISEG) Foundation, which was developed under an agreement signed with the state government in May.
Key Highlights of the Plan
The draft plan focuses on transforming Bengaluru into a global economic powerhouse by leveraging its strengths in technology, innovation, and infrastructure. It outlines strategies for sustainable growth, employment generation, and enhanced ease of doing business. The plan also emphasizes the need for improved urban infrastructure, including transportation, energy, and digital connectivity, to support the city's expansion.
ISEG Foundation's Role
The ISEG Foundation, a think tank specializing in sustainable development, was tasked with creating a roadmap for Bengaluru's economic transformation. The foundation's draft includes recommendations for policy reforms, investment promotion, and public-private partnerships. It also addresses challenges such as traffic congestion, pollution, and housing affordability, proposing integrated solutions.
Government's Next Steps
Following the review, the government will seek feedback from stakeholders, including industry bodies, civic groups, and the public. A final version of the plan is expected to be released after incorporating inputs. The state government aims to position Bengaluru as a model for other Indian cities, showcasing how economic growth can be aligned with sustainability and inclusivity.
The announcement comes amid Bengaluru's rapid urbanization and its status as India's Silicon Valley. The plan is seen as a critical step to maintain the city's competitive edge while addressing long-standing infrastructure gaps.
