The Congress legislature party, led by Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, convened a meeting at a private resort on the outskirts of Bengaluru on Tuesday. The session aimed to train approximately 40 first-time MLAs on voting procedures for the upcoming legislative council elections.
Training to avoid wasted votes
With the party fielding five candidates, a contest is anticipated with the JD(S) for the fifth seat, as both sides lack sufficient numbers for a clear victory. A Congress functionary stated, "In order to ensure that no vote is wasted, the party is holding training for the legislators."
New CM's meet and greet
The CLP meeting is also expected to feature the new Chief Minister Shivakumar engaging in a "meet and greet" with all his colleagues for the first time since assuming office. This informal interaction aims to foster camaraderie and unity among party members.
Uncertainty over overnight stay
Party MLAs indicated that there was no clarity on whether all members would stay overnight at the resort or only a select few. "While some outstation MLAs are expected to stay back, others may return to their homes in Bengaluru," said leaders and functionaries. They cited concerns about MLAs who are doubtful and may be incited to cross-vote, suggesting that such individuals might be asked to stay back to ensure party discipline.
Resort bookings cancelled for VVIPs
Interestingly, all pre-bookings at the resort were cancelled due to the CLP meeting and the arrival of VVIPs at the location. This move underscores the significance of the event and the party's focus on securing a successful outcome in the council elections.
