Congress Unveils Initial Candidate List for Assam Assembly Elections Amid Alliance Tensions

In a strategic and somewhat unexpected move, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) announced its first list of 42 candidates for the upcoming Assam assembly elections on Tuesday. This announcement comes at a critical juncture, as the opposition alliance in the state remains incomplete and negotiations are still ongoing with key regional partners.

Prominent Names and Key Constituencies in the Congress List

The list features several high-profile leaders from the Assam Congress, including state party president Gaurav Gogoi, who has been nominated from the Jorhat assembly seat. Gogoi, currently serving as the Lok Sabha MP from Jorhat, expressed his gratitude to the AICC leadership and the Central Election Committee for this nomination.

Other notable candidates include the leader of opposition Debabrata Saikia from Nazira, Congress MLAs Nandita Das from Hajo-Sualkuchi and Diganta Barman from Barkhetri. Additionally, Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress president Mira Borthakur Goswami has been fielded from the Dispur constituency in Guwahati.

The list also highlights the party's focus on youth leadership, with tickets awarded to Tanzil Hussain and Prateek Bordoloi, sons of Congress MPs Rakibul Hussain and Pradyut Bordoloi, from Samaguri and Margherita respectively.

Collision Course with Raijor Dal Over Seat-Sharing

Congress's decision to release this list has placed the party on a direct collision course with the regional Raijor Dal, led by Akhil Gogoi. The Raijor Dal had been anticipating that Congress would allocate some of these seats to them once the opposition alliance was finalized. Specifically, Congress's move to field former Assam PCC president Ripun Bora from Barchalla and contest from Demow and Gauripur has upset Raijor Dal, as discussions between the two parties were reportedly in an advanced stage.

Raijor Dal spokesperson Rasel Hussain expressed disappointment, stating that the party has strong candidates for seats like Barchalla and Demow. He emphasized that in the 2021 by-election, Raijor Dal secured more votes than Congress in Demow, making this first list a significant setback for their party workers' enthusiasm.

Gaurav Gogoi's Emotional Response and Vision for Assam

In a heartfelt message on social media platform X, Gaurav Gogoi thanked the people of Jorhat Lok Sabha and paid tribute to his late father, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, for instilling in him the values of being an Assamese and a Congressman. He also acknowledged his family's support and called upon fellow Congress members to unite in steering Assam towards a new and bold direction, envisioning a Natun Bor Axom (new greater Assam).

Current Status of Opposition Alliance Talks

While Congress's alliance plans with other parties such as the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), the All Party Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC), and the Left are nearing finalization, negotiations with Raijor Dal have hit a roadblock. Raijor Dal had previously indicated that an alliance could be sealed if Congress agreed to allocate five preferred seats from a list of 13, but the release of the first candidate list has complicated these discussions.

The political landscape in Assam remains dynamic as parties navigate these alliance challenges ahead of the assembly elections, with Congress taking an early step in solidifying its candidate lineup amidst ongoing diplomatic tensions.
