Congress Nominates Anurag Sharma for Himachal Rajya Sabha Seat After 2024 Setback
Congress Picks Anurag Sharma for Himachal Rajya Sabha Election

Congress Chooses Anurag Sharma for Himachal Rajya Sabha Bid Following Previous Defeat

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has officially announced Anurag Sharma, the president of the Kangra District Congress Committee, as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election from Himachal Pradesh. The election is scheduled to take place on March 16, with the nomination deadline set for March 5.

Strategic Move to Prevent Internal Dissent

This decision comes as the Congress party adopts a cautious strategy following a significant setback in the February 2024 Rajya Sabha polls. In that election, despite holding 40 seats in the 68-member state legislative assembly, Congress candidate Abhishek Manu Singhvi lost due to cross-voting by six rebel Congress MLAs and three independents. All nine legislators subsequently joined the BJP, creating political instability in the state.

To avoid a repeat of this scenario, the party has nominated Sharma, a young leader considered close to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. By selecting a candidate from the hill state, Congress aims to minimize internal dissent and consolidate its majority position.

Profile of the Candidate: Anurag Sharma

Anurag Sharma hails from the Baijnath assembly constituency in Kangra district, which is the most populous and politically significant district in Himachal Pradesh. His political career began in 1995 as a member of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress party. He was appointed president of the Kangra District Congress Committee in January of this year.

In addition to his political roles, Sharma serves as the current president of the Billing Paragliding Association, highlighting his involvement in local activities beyond politics.

Political Context and Seat Dynamics

The Rajya Sabha seat in question is being vacated by BJP leader Indu Bala Goswami. Currently, all three Rajya Sabha seats from Himachal Pradesh are held by BJP members. However, Congress holds a clear majority in the state legislative assembly with 40 out of 68 seats, compared to the BJP's 28. This majority positions the ruling party strongly to secure the seat, provided internal unity is maintained.

Other Contenders Considered

Before finalizing Sharma's nomination, the Congress party evaluated several other potential candidates. Central leaders in contention included:

  • Former Union minister Anand Sharma
  • Himachal Pradesh party in-charge Rajani Patil
  • Party national spokesperson Pawan Khera

Among state leaders, considerations were given to:

  • Health minister Colonel Dhani Ram Shandil (retd.)
  • Former state party president Pratibha Singh
  • Former ministers Kaul Singh Thakur and Asha Kumari

Additionally, names of advisors to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu—Sunil Bittu (political), Gokul Butail (IT), and Naresh Chauhan (media)—were also discussed during the selection process.

Implications for State Politics

The nomination of Anurag Sharma reflects Congress's effort to strengthen its foothold in Himachal Pradesh by leveraging local leadership and avoiding the factionalism that led to previous losses. With the election approaching, all eyes will be on whether the party can successfully mobilize its majority and secure the Rajya Sabha seat, potentially shifting the balance in the state's upper house representation.
