Congress Begins Talks with Shiv Sena (UBT), VBA for Nagpur Civic Polls Alliance
Congress in Alliance Talks with Shiv Sena (UBT), VBA for Civic Polls

In a significant political development, the Indian National Congress has officially initiated discussions to forge electoral alliances with key opposition parties in Maharashtra. The move targets the upcoming municipal corporation elections, with a clear focus on consolidating opposition unity at the crucial civic level.

Formal Talks with VBA and Shiv Sena (UBT) Underway

Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Harshwardhan Sapkal confirmed that negotiations have commenced with the Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA). Sapkal stated that sincere efforts are being made by leaders from both sides to reach a mutually agreeable seat-sharing formula. He emphasized a decentralized approach, noting that for municipal polls, the Congress typically allows its local units considerable autonomy in deciding alliances, while extending flexibility to partners like the VBA.

Parallel to these talks, the Congress is also engaged in discussions with Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT). This dialogue is being conducted within the broader frameworks of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) and the national INDIA bloc. Sapkal revealed that the party organisation has been formally instructed to proceed with these negotiations, although no formal proposals from other parties have been received yet.

Strategy Finalized in Key Mumbai Meeting

The alliance announcements followed a crucial meeting of the Congress state selection committee in Mumbai. The gathering was convened to deliberate on candidate nominations and finalize election strategy for 28 municipal corporations. Sapkal described it as a key stage in the process, where recommendations from district committees and critical social engineering considerations were taken into account.

The high-profile meeting saw attendance from a host of senior Congress leaders, including:

  • Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar
  • Satej Patil
  • Former chief ministers Prithviraj Chavan and Sushilkumar Shinde
  • Congress Working Committee member Chandrakant Handore
  • Former ministers Naseem Khan, Yashomati Thakur, and Ranjit Kamble
  • Goa in-charge Manikrao Thackeray
  • AICC secretary Kunal Chaudhary

Representatives from the Mahila Congress, Youth Congress, Seva Dal, and the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) were also present.

Delegated Leadership for Mumbai Negotiations

Clarifying the operational structure, Sapkal noted that he is not directly involved in negotiations for the high-stakes Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. Instead, the party has delegated this responsibility. AICC secretary UB Venkatesh has been tasked with leading the discussions with the VBA. Overall, the party has authorized a team of three leaders to handle communications and negotiations for the civic polls.

A Strategic Push for Opposition Consolidation

This flurry of alliance-building activity signals a concerted strategic push by the Congress to present a united opposition front in Maharashtra's urban local body elections. By engaging simultaneously with the Shiv Sena (UBT), its MVA partner, and the VBA, which holds significant influence among Dalit and Bahujan voters, the Congress aims to create a broad-based coalition capable of challenging the ruling alliance.

The move underscores the importance the party is placing on grassroots-level politics and its intent to regain footing in Maharashtra's crucial municipal landscape. The success of these talks could set the tone for opposition cooperation in future state and national elections.
